Ragweed

This stuff is causing me fits this year. I was at the farm July 11th to spray plots. My biggest plot is beans and this would be the 2nd time I sprayed it. First time got a great kill, but now the ragweed had germinated and took over the plot. I hit it hard with 2qt/ acre of 41% gly. Little bro just went up last weekend and it was still there. Yesterday I took the day off and ran up there. After 10 days it should have been toast, but it wasn’t flame

I had to run to the coop for more gly so I asked them what the heck. He said they have been having issues with killing it in the farm fields this year. He suggested that I hit it one more time while it was weak from the last application so I did. Hope that gets it. All the other plots I had sprayed got a great burn down and every other weed in the bean plot was dead, brown and wilted, but the ragweed was just hurting. Here is a pic of it after 10 days of the 2nd app of gly.

Holy moly that’s a lot of Ragweed !

I added some 2-4D to the roundup last time I sprayed.
Maybe just my imagination but it sure seemed to help the kill.
Seemed like it died faster and killed more of the tough ones faster…like burdock.

Good luck. I’ll be interested to hear if the 3rd round did the trick.

Yeah, I wanted to spray 2 weeks earlier (right at 4 weeks from first app), but my nephew thought I should be at his wedding whistling I think if I had gotten on it 2 weeks earlier I would have had a better chance when it was young.

Yikes. That’s Ragweed Invasion from Hell.

Hopefully the double spray knocks it out.

Well the bad news is the ragweed won the battle. The last app of gly did nothing. It did not appear to be growing still but did not wilt and die. The beans were out competed and the few that were still battling were browsed to the ground flame I mowed and turned the whole 4 acre plot yesterday so the #@%$% ragweed won’t seed out. My plan is to go up next weekend and plant oats in that field. My other plots were pretty much weed free with excellent rows of beans, but they were browsed to about 4-6″ tall. I sure don’t have a deer population shortage up there.

Good news is the big boy is still around all the time on the cams. I will post some pics in the trail cam thread.

Growing up on the farm there was two plants that we walked the bean fields for…Mustard and RagWeed!

Back breaking work but pulling the plants out at the base and leaving the roots in plain view of the sunlight will kill them off….But it looks like you maybe should have done that two months ago. Yike!!!

It sucks that you couldn’t kill off the Ragweed. Nasty stuff.

I’ve had the same problem with my corn plot that you are with the beans.
I planted about 20 rows, 100 or so yards long.
The last 50 yards have been eaten down to the stalk and on most plants…the stalk included. I watch them ripping and tearing at the corn plants and watch as 2 feet of leaves/stalks/ears disappear in their mouths. I’ve never seen deer gorge themselves on green corn like that.
Guess I better plant more next year if I want anything left for winter.

I planted beans in-between the corn rows so I have a lot of beans left. They must be a little hidden from them so they aren’t chowing them to the ground too.

I still have quite a few acres of Brassicas with stands over looking all of them! Good thing they don’t like to eat that until the frost/snow comes !!

I would plant either oats or rye in the plot, that way I could spray it with a broadleaf only chemical to try to kill the ragweed

The rye that I planted in this plot to save it for this year and give me some thatch for next year is doing quite well. I am impressed with how it is doing. We had 1″ of rain the day before I planted and we got .17″ since then. I planted this on August 21st.

Looks great! I can’t wait to see our fall plots in person this weekend. The trail cam pics look like they are coming along very nicely.
