Well, back in WI and wishing I was “back home” in Wyoming/Colorado. Sure is hard to describe how home-sick I feel since I left there….
For those that like to see high energy impact shots, here is what a 22-250 does to P/dogs at 200-450 yrds.

John, its a blast – (non pun intended) I put almost 1000 rounds through the Howa in the few afternoons I got out. Most of the land I had access to was shot up and they were pretty educated. Had to think outside the box and approach them from different areas that others had over looked. Great way to pratice your long range shooting. Most were 250 to 400 yrds. I miss that cannon camera though. That 51X zoom really narrows up the field of view.
Great stuff. My 5 year old is jamming to the music in the kitchen. So is dad….
I understand that “homesick” feeling. I took a cycle trip out in the Big Horns last Sept. and all I wanted to do was STAY! One day I hope to start hunting out there. I do have a “family” connection near Sundance that has a 28,000 acre ranch so I’m hoping that leads to something one day. It’s already been thrown around but I think until I’m able to make a plan, it’s just another iron in the fire.

Beautiful area. Here is my kids having a snowball fight up there at the end of June a couple years ago. My absolute favorite site in Wyoming is Ross Lake. The abundance of mountain lakes in that area is incredible. Definitely a hidden gem and I hope it stays that way!
Hey! You didn’t warn me that cuddly-wuddly wittle prarie dogs would be harmed in the making of that video.
Nice. Man, I LOVE putting the smackdown on pasture poodles.
Not sure if the ones shown represented the average size in CO, but if they did, those are HUGE compared to the average size I’ve hunted in SD and western WY. A lot of those looked more like groundhogs than p-dogs. All the better for the big splat.
A comment on the rangefinder. Nothing and I mean NOTHING messed up my ability to hit a p-dog worse than starting to use a rangefinder. It was a huge mistake because I was constantly catching myself second guessing and third guessing and forth guessing myself and making wild corrections or waiting too long to take the shot. Suddenly, I couldn’t have hit a bull in the [censored] with handful of rice. Even if the rangefinder told me the bull was well within rice range. Now I only take the rangefinder out to officially range a long hit. I didn’t even take it out of the pack on the last trip.
Great video. We have to try that next year when we’re out shooting.
Grouse
We’ve noticed on a couple of these sections that the size of them changes often. In Aug, we were shooting a ton of little ones about the size of a chimpmunk. Back on the same property a couple months later, and very few little ones. Plus, these properties are shot up heavily and they are well educated. I did a lot of spot/stalk on these big puppies in areas that other guys didn’t get close to. I also had to be very careful of shooting backdrop on the landscape. Not shown is a few of the neighboring houses.
As for the rangefinder, it was more of a necessity for me. We shot the vast majority of them at 325-400 yrds. Zeroed at 250, and shooting a couple inches high at 100, made for a few close range misses when guessing a 250 yrd shot was actually 180’s. Regardless, I got to blow up a lot grass puppies and made this rancher very happy with a standing invite back at anytime.
The vapor trail was pretty cool in a couple of the slow motion scenes. We’d always site in our rifles at a PD town on the ranch we used to hunt in WY. Hollow Tip 30-06 shell really did a number on them critters.

I’m sure there wasn’t much left. Back in ’09, my brother n law needed about 80 cheap Remington rounds shot off for his 7mm Ultra Mag so he could have the brass for reloading. I had a few about 15-20 feet in the air….or at least parts of them
I agree on seeing the trail in flight in slow motion. The cannon camera I had I thought did a great job in most lighting conditions and that 51X zoom really reaches out there. I think its the one around 3:20 that you can really see the arc of the bullet and shows how far I was reaching out on some of these.
