Love to help but never seen that water yet. What I do know is Steve Jonesi used to fish it and from the vids I have seen done quite well. Weagle I think was a good bait choice from what I can remember from discussing that lake with him.
Fall 2008 was my first sighting and the beginning to a 2 year obsession!
I was siting on bow stand on a nice fall night when I saw him! It was so fast I wasn’t sure if I was imagining things or the sunlight hit it just right but I saw him! a few nights later it happened again! again it was just for a split second and left myself wondering if I saw what I thought I saw. although I spent many more nights in that stand that fall I never saw the little guy again until the fall of 2009. After a good sighting I basically gave up on deer and focused on this little guy! I was officially obsessed! many night I was sitting, waiting, hopping to get a shot! Still he evaded me!
This year I had a slow start to my bow hunting but wouldn’t you know when I did make it out! Who was there to give me another quick glimpse!
Many days hunting pinpointing his location I finally saw him climb into his nest! Now I knew where he lived! Still This little guy Kicked my a few more times before finally he made his mistake! I was sitting waiting and new he would be coming back home before dark to climb in his nest! Crunch crunch I heard him bouncing across the forest floor and jumped up on a downed tree just a few feet away giving me a perfect shot!
After this long pursuit and countless encounters with this little guy I never felt so rewarded in the taking of an animal and never felt so sad at the same time!
Kinda bonded with the little feller after all we had been threw! and I know there’s not a trophy on my wall I’m more proud of than this little squirrel!
Very, very cool story! The trophy is in the eye of the beholder.
WOW that is really awesome. I’ve only seen one once in my life. I’m envious of you that’s going to be great mount. Congrats
WTG!!! I’m envious as well. congrats on getting the little guy. Now you need the black one that is running around my woods. haha
Congrats on the little trophy. Good thing you got him before the snow flys!
We have a few white squirrels running around town every year. I’ve had a couple in my yard. Too bad the FW won’t let me break out the Gamo and collect one for the wall
I’ve never seen one in the woods. Now you need a black one and a really big fox squirrel. That would make an awesome mount!
Congrats!
Very cool, and thanks for sharing the story. Funny how the dedication you showed in getting this particular squirrel is similar to the way many would hunt a specific big buck or turkey. I’ve never seen one in the wild, what a trophy!

thats sweet when i first seen the post a while back i “todays post” i thought i was going to be reading a deer story very cool
Cool story and thanks for sharing. It’s ironic how attached we get to the animals we pursue to kill.
I’ve not been hunting or in my regular hunting area whenever I see the white ones. Very cool to have the opportunity.
About 3 years ago, I spotted a black one running near the cabin and returned a week later to see if me or my son could get a shot. We walked into the same area I had seen it in the week before and I couldn’t believe how easy it was! It’s like we never left! It ran up a tree and started to bark but my son couldn’t pick it out cuz it was still about a 35yd shot off this ridge and just too mixed in the dark spruce and balsams in the background for his inexperienced eyes to pick out. The situation called for a shot now or it’d be in the greens long before we could get closer so I raised the trusty old Remington 582 and added it to collective history.
When Tanner saw it fall, he said, “You hit that!?!?!” Apparently, we’re supposed lose our ability to use iron sights after age 18 or something…. But we hiked down the ridge and spent some time admiring something neither of us had ever been so close to. It wasn’t real big, but black as could be.
A short while later we moved down to one of my favorite deer stands and decided to wait awhile there. Squirrels are often scampering through so I figured we’d give it 30 minutes. About 10 minutes later a second black squirrel come barrelling through like he was on a mission so I gave a vocal yip to stop him and the 582 did it’s job again. Poor boy said he could here something coming but wasn’t ready for something on the run and wasn’t in position to make the shot. So there we were, having never seen a black squirrel in the wild while hunting to having 2 within an hour of each other, and the second one was almost as big as a fox squirrel! It was huge compared to the first one. I’d post a pic of the two but my old tower bit the big one and I lost all the pics on the hard drive. I have all my photos saved on cd’s but haven’t really had the time to reload.
Congrats on that whitey! It is a cool feeling when you know you’ve been given something unique!
Never seen a white one before. Lots of Black ones. Cant wait till deer season is over to go get some to put in my belly. MMMMMMM Tasty little buggers
Cool We have a couple blacks in the yard.. same deal, the wife won’t let me have one
Awesome. We’ve got two whites in our neighborhood. They’re pretty neat to see. Our dog is mesmerized by them when he sees them.
It’s funny, but the greys don’t seem to like them–squirrel racism!
