Squirrel calls?

Anyone use them? I’ve tried one and it doesn’t seem to help anything. I’m a classic stalker and can rack up a pan full of squirrel doing this so am I missing something or should I dump the call and stick with my traditional methods?

Side note: Shot 2 black squirrels 50 yards apart last weekend. I’ve never even seen one on my property before so 2 so close together seemed strange…..but cool! Aren’t these just a color morph of the gray, not as rare as the albinos? One was small, the other quite large, and both were female. Just curious if anyone has any info to offer.

I grew up using a squirrel call with some success,primarily, if a squirrel was in the tree and waiting you out.

Where I lived in Menomonie Wi,black squirrels were the dominant variety there,but rare as heck from my home area in south west Wi.

Pretty ignorant about squirrel hunting – never knew there was such a thing as a call. They are so thick where we hunt, I wish I had something to scare them off without scaring anything else – the noise the squirrels and turkeys make makes it virtually impossible to ever hear a deer coming. The main reason I am responding to this post is yesterday morning while in my blind at first light, I caught movement off to my right. At first glance, I thought it was skunk going up a tree. It turned out to be a squirrel that was nearly all white on the topside and fairly dark on the bottom. Piebald? In any case, really neat (and fairly big) squirrel.

Your right the black color is jsut a seperae phase for them. We got quite a few of them around here. Not many grays overall, as the reds run them out.

Calls work good to locate others in the area. Also to get them back out after you have shot. Used a few differnt models, but have gotten real good at doing it with out one. The best I used was the kind with the acordian like rubber on them that you tap on your leg, or something. As for doing it with your hands try cupping your hands and makeing a kissing sound. Little practice and you can get the pitch right. You can control the sound level by opening your hands up.

Give one a try, you may just bag a few more.
