So I had to go back to Colorado to finish some jobs we are doing at Fort Carson, the Army base in Colorado Springs, so I brought along a rifle to do a little prairie dog hunting.

Friday I got off work and headed Southwest of the Springs (that’s what the locals call it) to do a little scouting for Saturday. I headed towards the town of Westcliffe on a tip from a friend of a friend. Well we all know how those turn out I didn’t see a single dog but it was a beautiful drive and I saw a ton of Antelope several over 14″, Mule Deer and a coyote.

Saturday, I got up early and headed South again to the town of Penrose. When I had driven through there the night before I saw several dog towns but they were all to close to town so I figured there must be more in the surounding area. Well I spent 7 hours driving around trying to track down land owners to get permission with no success. Frustrated I started heading back to “the Spring” this time heading West towards Pueblo and then north on the east side of I-25. About 4:00 I’m driving along a low and behold a dog town, not a huge one but about 40 acres right along the gravel road and there are dogs running everywhere. I pulled into the house that was right next to it and knock on the door, 30 minutes later I’m opening the gate and driving in for my first ever Prairie Dog hunt.

This wasn’t a huge town but it was big enough for one person and about three hours of fun. There was probably about 100 dogs in this town when I started, now only about 60 still live there but it was a blast.

    Equipment:
    Bushmaster A3 Target (Sportmans Warehouse)
Nitrex 6-20X50MM (New Scope from ATK)
    Remington 50Gr. HP
    Temp. 104 F

This trip had several firsts for me. New gun, first prairie dog hunt, and first double on dogs.

    Hope you enjoyed,

    Steve
