Glad to hear the grouse numbers are solid. Heading to the cabin next couple of weekends, will take a few walks in the woods.

Last weekends temps would have been fantastic for opening weekend. Looks like we get summer style hunting for this opener. I will probably just do chores. Maybe get out for a walk or do some scouting.

Just signed up to run my older dog for a youth pheasant hunt the weekend before opener. Hoping it isn’t as hot as last year. Great way to see what kind of shape he’s in. Hoping to run the new pup next year.

I think he’s talking about South Dakota. They have one before their regular pheasant opener.

It’s a gamefarm deal through my Pheasants Forever chapter. Should have specified. Not a state sponsored thing.

Well, I’ve heard several flushes on first walk. Dogs are getting tired out and that’s what matters lol

I was busy so only got out for an hour. Got 2 which was shocking but my heart wasn’t in it with the high temps. Did bump a mega covey with at least a dozen birds. I only got one out of that group. Just didn’t feel like killing.

I don’t hunt and I hate this heat too. REAL fall is way too short.

Flushed a couple grouse on Saturday, never saw them though. We need to loose some leaves, thick yet.

Got 3, missed 2 more walking trails near Ely opening morning. used my great grandfathers gun that was handed down to me when my father passed away a few weeks ago. it was a great tribute hunt. gun is a savage 22 over 410. I did get the 2 spruce grouse with the 22.

Sorry to hear about your father’s passing. It is a great tribute to use there once owned guns. It’s almost like walking with them again.

We ate the two last night and they were grade A. Both young birds. Tender and juicy. Far superior to pheasant. Older birds are not as good for sure and Im starting to cook them differently based on age.

Too hot and buggy in the jungle last weekend, passing on this weekend, will let it cool, the bugs die off and foliage come down before hitting it hard. Birds are there. We flushed several but only dropped one.

Long awaited trip to north shore this weekend and its going to be a scorcher. DAMMIT. Looks like shorts on trails and scratched up legs in the woods.

North Shore this past weekend. Bird numbers were not that impressive. Two of us ended up with 10. The traffic was crazy. There was no place you could escape other hunters or at least cars and ATV’s. Even saw a moped with a gun scabbard.
No matter how far away you went, there was someone else there. Reminded me of hunting pheasants on Minnesota WMA’s. I had planned to go back in two weeks but will likely cancel and go elsewhere. Saw a nice bull moose! Topped out at 80+ both days I hunted. I hunted in shorts most of the time.

10 grouse is not terrible in 80 degree heat amongst a swarm of hunters. Nice job.
