Have always used quicksilver premium plus. Was in my local Walmart today and saw quicksilver synthetic blend. Tried doing a search and all I could find was a couple mentions saying that it’s better than the premium plus. Just wondering if anybody else has more information?

In general the synth blends will burn cleaner and with lower smoke.

    However…

I’ve never see such a difference as when I switched my 150 Ocean Pro Johnson over from the cheapo oils like quicksilver or OMC oils to Pennzoil Premium Plus.

I was tired of the smoke and the fouling of these big engines, and a carbed 150 is such a gas pig that I was going through gallons of oil a season.

So I asked the boys who KNOW real world 2 stroke operations, I posted on a couple of saltwater fishing forums about 10 years ago. These guys are running big singles and a lot are running twins or triples and for many of them a “day” of fishing involves 100+ miles of running and 50+ gallons of fuel burned. They don’t buy gallons of oil, most of them at the time bought CASES of oil at a time.

The overwhelming response to question of best low-cost oil for performance and low smoke was Penzoil Preimum Plus. These guys were buying pallet loads of it from Walmart when it went on sale down in FL and the southeast.

    What a difference.

Thanks for the info. Guess I should have clarified. Quicksilver premium plus is a synthetic blend also.

I have considered the penzoil in the past. Maybe I should give it a shot.

I switched from Pennzoil PP to Lucas land and sea, time will tell which is better. Can say when I took off the lower unit couple nights ago the entire exhaust housing was way cleaner than with the Pennzoil and whatever other oil the previous owners used(ive taken it off a few times in the last half year doah ).

Way I look at it, having the boat running for probably 6 good weeks now, and filling er up as often as I do with the cost savings of switching to 87, I can upgrade the oil. Gas goes boom no matter what cost, not all oils are created equal and good lube will always make er happier. woot

Saw home depot had Pennzoil premium plus last night, come to think I got XLF at Walmart. They carried it at Advance auto as well I believe. But your locals may be different.

I realize that it’s been proven that running synthetic in your auto shows better performance. Mercury motors getting shipped out the door here in Fond du Lac, even if they’re the XS motors, have the tests in the factory done with the Premium Plus, which is the non-synthetic oil. Don’t ask me why that is if they’re touting the synthetic as the way to go for the XS motors. The more reliable mechanics in the area will say save your money and run the Premium Plus, the one I take mine to for winterization worked at Merc in the engineering department for a couple of years and knows his stuff. I’m sure you can’t go wrong with either one, but I was told if you were going to the synthetic brand to get as much of the non-synthetic out prior to filling up.

I was at wally looking at the same thing ahead of my trip this weekend. Quicksilver products are recommended by mercury and they might be made by them or at the same place as the mercury products. They both look like synthetic blends and are similar in price $3.78 to $4.49 for half qt at my Wal-Mart. They both say for marine outboard use. Any way i don’t know the actual difference but neither would void the warranty on a merc.

Quicksilver is to Mercury as Motor craft is to Ford. Samecompsny with different names for the parts.

So far I have been told they are the same product (not sure I believe that as they are different prices and labels) to being told that the Synthetic Blend is a little bit better than premium plus.

Thanks for the into. I’m wondering if the premium plus is new and they’re phasing out the synthetic blend.

I called mercury. They told me that the premium plus and synthetic blend are the same thing. They also told me that the premium plus has had the packaging changed this year. It’s the same as the mercury brand premium plus 2 stroke I’ve been using until this year. I also talked to him about quikleen. He suggested quickare. It does the same thing as quikleen but it has a stabilizer for the fuel and treats twice the amount of fuel.

    coffee

A lot of older mercs are recommended to run on 87 and get less performance out of premium.

so if a guy has a 2001, 200 hp Merc Optimax, what type of fuel and oil could a guy use without breaking the bank? I’ ve always used the high end Merc oil and run 91 octane for fuel
