I have a friend who loves to spend time trolling, but will also take the time to catch in any manner as long as the catching is good… He is a pretty good troller as well. Still got stuff to learn, but who can’t learn something new, right… So while I have ice fished the Bay several times in my life, I have only fished it a few times.

With the fish in close at this time of year, and a good Gillespie show from a couple of weeks ago, to go along with a need for prefishing for a high school tournament (Jim Hudson Memorial) and no ice has made Lake Superior a prime choice in the past month.

We started offshore searching for the jumbo SMB’s with some help from old friends, advice from a few guide friends and some logic based off of the info from the JG show. After a couple of hours trying here and there, we resolved to go check for other species that inhabit the bay and inside the Apostle Islands. Knowing that splake, lakers and browns would probably be inhabiting …

and I have to finish this later as the end of my day has come and traveling to ref a bball game has come as well.

… and now for the rest of the story…

shallow water, and hearing that fish were using the Bono Creek area as well as the Houghton Point area, we had a bite of lunch and then set up to troll and ran down to Bono from Washburn. Not know what to expect we ran down the 20′ contour until it took a 90* towards Ashland, set the boat down and started to set up to troll ‘tween the 10′ and 20′ contours. We picked up two splake and watched in wonderment as a boat with a mast and skis ran on the inside of us and a pretty good clip. We never did see them hook up so we felt confident that they were either too shallow or going too fast…

We felt like this was more exploratory than precision fishing, so with a minor coming at us, we decided to explore the Houghton Point area… With the wind kicking up more than what we expected, we snuck to the north side and set and pulled toward the Souix and Onion rivers… picked up the biggest fish in 26’ of water, then just off the mouth of the Souix an undersized splake.

As we were finishing up just after 4 p.m., we snuck off the break line and as we did these beauties starting show up on the screen… Hoping to get back up there on Sunday, but we’ll see what the weather does to us and perhaps we have a point to start from trolling until we see enough to maybe do a little bit of jigging…
