Questions : Trout Stamp and Trout Lure Rules

I have never fished for trout but I see that there are some “trout” lakes in the Twin Cities area, like Cenaiko Lake for example. I thought maybe I’d give it a try this season. But I’m confused about the rules.

I always thought you needed a trout stamp to fish for trout, but I just read that if you are over 65 years old, you don’t need a trout stamp. Is this really true?

I read that Cenaiko has a 1 hook rule. Does this mean I would need to replace a treble on a spinner with a single hook?
I know that’s the case on Lake Superior when close to a stream feeding into the lake. But I’ve seen YouTube videos of people fishing Cenaiko with crankbaits that had the typical 2 sets of treble hooks.

    Thanks in advance.

It doesn’t look like Cenaiko has special regulations besides being a designated trout lake. You don’t need trout stamp if you’re 65+ or under 18. Can only use one line. My understanding is you can use one lure or tackle configuration, same as everywhere, with the exception that you can’t add a stinger in a trout lake.

Edit: in one spot it says “Additional restrictions on a designated trout lake include a prohibition on the use of live minnows for bait, limiting anglers to the use of one line with one hook at any time (summer or winter), and a limit on fishing hours between 1 hour before sunrise to 11:00 P.M.”

The rule book though only mentions it for lake superior and tributaries that I see. In the regular trout section it says look at page 29 for legal tackle and that’s the same for everywhere besides that it says “Unless fishing on a designated trout stream or lake, you may add one additional “stinger” hook on a line as part of a single artificial lure or bait.”

Well, learn something new every day. I had no idea the Trout stamp had an age requirement. Technically I didn’t need to purchase one for the last two years. Oh well, the money is supposed to go for good things so I have no regrets.

You do not need to replace treble hooks with single hooks if they are part of a single lure like you do on Lake Superior tribs.

How many lines can I use?
You may use one line in summer or winter on designated trout lakes and streams. On non-designated trout lakes and streams, you can use one line in the summer and two lines in the winter.

Can I use artificial lures? How many hooks are allowed?
You can use one artificial lure on a line that can have up to three hooks.

Edit: in one spot it says “Additional restrictions on a designated trout lake … limiting anglers to the use of one line with one hook at any time (summer or winter) …”

That was the main reason why I asked the question. I know under usual circumstances, one lure, even with multiple trebles, counts as one hook. But the regulations specifically mentions the “additional restrictions” with the “one hook” rule for designated trout lakes. But the regulations don’t expand on it. I suppose I can call the DNR and specifically ask about Cenaiko.
