Correction: It’s my 5 year old Granddaughters boat and I’m sticking with that story.
First off I’m a catfish/sturgeon guy. Secondly I don’t use it for that so far anyway. All I’ve caught out of it is walleyes trolling or dragging.
I had 100 hours on the Yammi when I had it winterized last fall.
1. What sorts of real world numbers have you all been seeing for top speed with the VF150 SHO? (I have seen the performance reports that put it around ~47mph). How is the hole shot compared to other similar class boats you have been in?
I can get 44 mph any day of the week. One experienced driver pulled 47 out of it by tickling the trim. For a hole shot, all I have to compare it to is my 17′ Lund with a 90. So with that in mind, I’m very happy with the speed and hole shot. It takes off and goes!
2. Any issues at all with this boat being used to pull the occasional tube or skier?
I haven’t pulled a skier, but done some tubing. It’s a pleasure.
3. How is it in rougher water? any comparisons to say the 1850 ranger reata? Again, can’t compare it to a Ranger…just don’t know. I can tell you I’ve had it on Pepin in 3 foot waves and felt very comfortable. I wouldn’t have in my Lund. In fact, I’ve accidentally had it air borne at least 3 times and didn’t realize it until well after it landed. (of course I don’t recommend this but it happens when a person doesn’t see a wake coming clipping along at 30-40). Since I’m I was a tin boat guy, I’m very easily impressed with the ride of glass.
4. Anybody wished they would have gone with the tandem axle trailer on this boat? NO.
5. Did anybody feel that this boat needs a 36v trolling motor?
Now again I’ve never used the 24v Minn Kota Ulterra 80 for more then 3 -4 hours so I’m a little green in answering that question as well. I fish the river and there is a lot of current at times. I think i would recommend looking into a kicker more then upgrading beyond a 80. Kinda depends on where you’re going to use it (lake or river) mostly.
Now after that awesome review, allow me to tell you what I don’t like:
I should have elected to have gone with a Lowrance unit. The Helix 7 chirp has been the biggest pain in the butt for me.
The bimini top is built solid. It just needs to be 7″ longer over the driver/passenger. It’s great for the sun but won’t keep you dry in a rain.
That’s it. I & and the family love that boat for what we use it for.
I’m in Red Wing until Monday. Fishing tomorrow, tubing on Sunday and taking the Favorite Wife out for her first boat ride this year later in the day. I’m sure we can get Dean down to let you test drive mine or if he’s not available, I’ll go with you…I don’t require cookies.
