I’ll be retiring in a bit and looking for a side gig when I do. I have 10 acres of which 5 is tillable with a creek running thru.
How much money do you think you can make growing this stuff?
I know a couple guy’s that really now how to grow so I’m good there.
I’m thinking of having my daughter apply for the license to give me a better shot at it.
BTW – I haven’t smoked it since the 70’s so my profits will not go up in smoke.

You would have to sell it to a dispensary of some sort. I’d imagine none of these guys are hip in to that and that’s more business / state kind of questions. On the street a plant can range from a few grams to 700 grams depending on the growing period and place. That changes prices from a 100 bucks to a few grand, and that’s non dispensary your local guy at the bar.

More and more this is a big business without much room for little guys. Private equity is running the game pretty much.

It wouldn’t really matter how much of your land is tillable, the growing season in the Midwest would be too short to be competitive. You would probably need to make a large investment in an indoor grow operation.

I’d rather spend my retirement smoking it than growing it but that’s just me.

Minnesota seems tough without the capital investment to go the indoor 100% climate controlled route…and the turn around on that investment would be a good chunk of time.

I have a college buddy that does a grow operation in Colorado and has also opened some type of CBD business in Wisconsin. He’s admitted times over that if you don’t find a real specific niche and application to differentiate, you will get swallowed by the big guys. As it becomes more popular, the competition follows. I think to scale it’d be something that wouldn’t fit the retirement timeline for ROI, moreso a person’s kids at best.

Best of luck with retirement and any side hustles you take a shot on!

I think the process for industrial supplier is a couple years out yet. However hemp is a legitimate stand in until then. Gets you into the market that is in place. Your local college might offer the business and licensing classes, ours does. I think its going to be like growing hops though too. It sounds cool, but if you don’t have a major cottage buyer its tough to compete. It’s $60,000 for a cultivator, manufacturer, wholesaler license.

No one is going to buy outdoor grown weed for medical or dispensary, to dirty, bugs and dirt are no good for commercial use. You would have to put up an big ass green house LOL

There is still a market for outdoor product but MN isn’t the place to grow it if you’re trying to turn a profit. See clean green certification for example. A lot of good product is still grown outdoors in Northern CA.

Always thought it be fun to run a roadside honestly box pumpkin stand if I had a few acres. Or get a contract with Hyvee or what not. Good luck in your ventures !

You’re not going to produce a marketable product growing outside like tomatoes.
No way. The marketable stuff is precision engineered and indoors. All aspects of the growth like temp, humidity and light are precisely controlled and necessary for the stuff people expect these days.

Awesome. Put up a Cheech & Chong farm stand beside the road with an honesty box.

    Basically just like sweet corn…

I wouldn’t waste the money trying to get into a commercial operation, that’s locked up by the tribe and big companies out west. You can have 4 plants in flower and up to 8 plants if not flowering as a citizen.i enjoy having 4 perfect plants vs tons of larf..
With a little greenthumb luck and feeding/pruning habits you can make 1 plant absolutely giant, for real-giant!!
Fun to grow along with my hot peppers.

Even if you could grow it outdoors, you would need to hire a security team to keep the dopers from stealing it. Where did you say your property was EPG? -)

There is not any money in outdoors. Gotta do indoor living soil or hydro. Living soil is where it’s at but longer cycle.

Growing herb is easy. Growing really really good herb that you can make money off of is not easy. To make money long term you need to have really good stuff.

If you want to make money quick get in the retail business early in legal states such as MN. Way more profitable than farming. There is boatloads to be made. Just be ready to sell and cash out before the wave breaks. You’re selling a revenue stream and you need to sell at the peak. I’d do it but can’t with my other businesses.

I don’t know about the growing season in Mn too short… I know people who have grown it for decades… one guy would plant it in his visually impaired neighbors flower garden… the old guy would tend and water and weed it daily. He always called them his skunk plants… he always had a crop come fall.

People have been tracking cannabis genetics for decades. The first time I ever heard about finishing dates was from pot growers not corn farmers. I’m kinda excited about the genetic throwdown when people can start trademarking their genetics. Monsanto is gonna have a fun time fighting 400 potheads over who came up with White Widow, or Mighty Might.
