Question on carbon

So I am looking for some advise on carbon blanks. I am about a year into ice rod building. Built up 10 or so. Having a blast doing it. About to order another round of blanks and I am in a never ending rabbit hole trying to learn about carbon.

I was hoping someone can tell me what I am
Missing from an expensive blank in the 25+$ range and a 8$ Blank say they are both the same length and both solid Carbon.

am I paying for someone’s “special taper or is there an actual and noticeable difference in the carbon. I sand my own blanks down so I don’t want to pay extra for a popular companies taper but also don’t want to buy crap carbon if there is much of a difference.

So this is a long ways of saying, what if any difference is there in carbon blanks and what does that difference mean for the blank, more sensitive, higher QC Etc.

    Thanks for the help lads.

From my understanding, blank cost has to do with the quality of the material and the number of tappers it’s made with. So you pay more if it is already tappered or tappered in a complicated way. If you are already going to be sanding them yourself, you are adding the complicated tapper and don’t need to pay for it ahead of time.

99% of the people using solid carbon blanks could not tell you the difference. There is some difference in materials, resin, and the way the blank is made. Yes most of the added cost is the “special taper” and the tolerances that it is grounded to. Some are straighter than others. Other than that I have not notice much if any difference.

I would reach out to a builder named Chris Stanton on Facebook. I own a handful of rods in which he made the carbon blanks from scratch by hand and they are the best I’ve every used. I know that decorative wraps are what he is most known for but he also makes his own carbon blanks and carbon Fiber grips. He is a good dude and I’m sure he’s willing to answer your questions.
