Question for propane auger owners

I just picked up an Eskimo hc40 8 inch auger. My first question is about leaving the propane tank connected. When I’m out hole hopping I’ll drill a few holes and fish them for an hour, then move again. Is it ok to leave the tank screwed in for an hour or should it be removed? I’m not talking about when it’s super cold outside and the tank getting cold is an issue. Second question: how many inches of ice can I expect to get per tank? Thanks guys!

I leave my tank on my jiffy almost all winter and it hasn’t had a problem in 3 years, a tank will last me well over 100 holes on mine.

Only time I take tank off my Pro4 is when I’m swapping for a fresh one. Never calculated how much ice per tank, but I did over 30 holes through 2+ feet the other day and didn’t use a whole one.

I always forget to remove the tank. Had mine for 4 years. Bring an extra tank and drill away. You’ll be amazed at how many holes you can drill.

I have an HC40 and I only take the tank off when I know I’m not fishing for 4-5 days. I’ve drilled over 100 holes on the first tank of propane, zero issues with freeze-up or any other cold related issues, fishing down to -24F. Has never taken more than 2 pulls to start, even at those cold temps.

I have a Pro-4 Lite as a wheelhouse/backup auger and it has sat on its hook in the garage an entire winter with a tank on it, no problem. I don’t try to make a habit of doing that, but it’s happened and it was fine.

Have an Eskimo HC40, this year I purposely left the same tank on all winter to see how many holes it will drill, its up to 30+ and the tank is still at least half full. No issues starting it in any temp.

I went on Jiffy’s website to see if they had any info on storing with or without propane canister attached.
They didn’t have anything on it, but I did end up gettin one of these.

    Anyone use these??

I forgot my tank on from last year. It sat over all summer and when I hit the ice it still worked for many outings and holes. I always bring an extra tank with and when fishing I store the auger in the back of my portable to help weigh it down. I have never had an issue.

I keep my auger in a bag. But I use the Cabela’s bag. It is much cheaper.

An auger bag came with my Tanaka/Nils Combo when I bought it almost 10 years ago. I have maybe used the bag a dozen times since then. But it does remind me that I have it and I may try using it again…

I own a Eskimo p1 rocket 8 inch. just put on a new tank and drilled 42 holes at about 20 inches and only used 3.3 oz of propane. 30 of those in one shot and never had a problem. temp was about 8 degrees.

This is my first propane auger so I’m not quite sure how how that computes in the long run over the life of the tank.

For those of you who own propane augers does the performance drop off in the second half of the tank and do you actualy run the tanks completely dry?

On my jiffy pro 4 lite it seems to completely use up the whole tank without effecting performance, when it does acually run out it will start reving way up before it shuts off, somewhat surprised me the first time it happened.
