Specifically would like to know if anyone could help. I would like to purchase a 16 ft lund alaskan .Because of horsepower restriction. I will be limited to a 20 hp outboard.I understand these boats are factory rated for more then 20 hp.. Has anyone owned one of these 16 ft alaskan boats with just a 20 hp if so how does it push the boat, thanks jim

I owned an Alumacraft Yukon 16’ for several years (basically the same boat). I hAd a 25 hp and it pushed it along fine. Fished several years on Mille Lacs with that set up.

    Not sure what year boat you are looking at,but I had a 1987 16′ with a 25HP Evinrude.It did decent,about 22MPH according to a paddle wheel speedo.

I have a 1996 16 ft lund rebel with a 25 hp merc two stroke.. I loved that little boat. It was pretty much the 1st fishing boat that I owned. I bought that boat in 2002 and we still have it today. My dad has it up north at the family cabin. The two stroke pushes it just fine. 18-24 mph depending on weight in the boat.

I have not ran the 20 hp motors and believe you might loose a little with it but should be just fine if you are just fishing with 2 people and gear. Possibly more.

My wife, dog and myself would take that boat up and down the river all the time with a cooler and camping gear with no issues.

I should add that the newer 16′ Alaskans are a fair amount larger and heavier than the old ones and rated for a 60 hp outboard. You might struggle with the 20-25 hp on a newer model. I am note sure what year they got larger but you should be able to look that up in the past Lund catalogs as they are all posted on the Lund website.

A little tidbit;in 1987 one could get the Alaskan for about 1500.00 or so.Add 489.99 for an EZ loader roller trailer and 1899.99 for a wretched 45HP Mariner(Monday Mercury).I loved the Alaskan, but that POS outboard made me sell it.Seemed like the dealer could not get it running properly under warranty. But the guy that tried it out and gave me my asking price was thrilled.
