With the upcoming Green Bay “unofficial” GTG I wanted to make sure I had close to the right rod set-up…..don’t really want to buy a new one…but I will if I have to..
    Right now I have a 36″ Croix Premier MH ,A 32″ M Berkley,and a 28″ Croix Premier ML…
    I plan on using 8lb Ice braid with a 4lb floro leader….
Does this sound reasonable?? Any other tips and such from the guys that know Whitefishing??

Anybody else that a re coming up have any questions??

I personally do not have a “good” rod. Just average box store Gander stuff. Medium to medium lite, 28″ for sitting in the shack. I toss on one of my panfish reels from the summer with 8# braid, tie a 6# floro leader on and away I go. I like the braid for feeling the really light bites, but don’t set the hook hard as you’ll pull free. Bites feels more like added weight most of the time.

It would be fun having “good” stuff, but unlike a light panfish bite where I think a good rod could be helpful, I don’t see that so much here. Good feel, and the right stuff on the business end and I am confident.

I’ll try proving that again Monday.

I’m with cycle, ‘feel’ is not super important. In most cases the whitefish just kid of ‘load up’ on the upswing of your jigging motion. Special set-ups aren’t really necessary — I usually fish near shore spots and rarely over 40′ so I use the same perch rods I use on Winnebago…28″ ML, 4# mono, 4# flouro leader. However, I do have one braided set-up for deep water over 40′

Line, 8 pound braid and either 4 or 8 pound fluorocarbon.

I use a number of different rods.

I use rods that I built with DH Al Dente blanks to medium walleye rods.

A lot of guys and most guides like 30″-36″ light action rods.
They just wait for the rod to load up. They like this for using the whitefish rig.

I use rods like the Al Dente for fishing with jigs like a Mudbug. Like them a lot when the whitefish are not on fire. Colors like wood-tick and tutti fruity.

I like a 30″-33″ light extra fast Rod for the whitefish rig with lighter spoons and bigger “Mudbug” type jigs.
For heavier jigs like jigging raps, castmasters and pimples I like a medium light fast 30″-33″ rods.

The whitefish rig is a Lindy rig with a jig on the bottom and a hook or vertices ice fishing jig above the swivel. The leader length is 8″-12″ for me. I use 8 pound fluorocarbon. With spoons and raps I have a fat snap on the bottom.

    Baits:
#2-#5 jigging Shad raps and jigging raps, I like the Shad rap better, REMOVE BOTTOM TREBLE, OR GET READY TO SNAGGED NONSTOP.
Colors, Jigging raps and jigging Shad raps:
Gold and black, chrome clown, chrome blue, perch and custom painted.
    Color, spoons:
Pimples, castmasters and want to try the new tungsten spoon from Northland.
Gold, brass, Copper and any combo with them
In deeper water if I am using a spoon I take off the treble hook or exchange it for a single hook. The spoon is more for the flash.

Tipping the slider and jigs I use waxes, spikes, colored spikes and gulp fish fry. I like the luma glow fish fry, if I am catching them on the fish fry, they are active an I am banging the fish.

I use both a camera and sonar. There is a lot of current. I drill three holes and fish the middle one, moving the transducer as the current changes. Normally the current runs north or south. If you fish with a camera, put the camera away from the hole you are fishing. Whitefish love to circle and you can’t believe how far off to the side they can get. In deeper water you will need to pull lines when someone has a fish on if you are in a shanty.

If you have any questions just post or throw me a pm.

You’re not allowed to fish whitefish without the best tackle money can buy. I would immediately call John at tuned up custom rods for at least a five rod and reel Assortment loaded with top of the shelf line, make sure its the .most expensive. Lastly you need 3 of every color of rapala #3 jigging raps. Get cracken on this, time is short.

I do to suzuki….But,when I fished tullibee,it was in a lot shallower water…..plus the Bay has current, quite strong in some places….
    That’s why I thought a bit stouter rod….

You figure out if your gonna come on over yet??
