I got bored this afternoon so I dug into a box of goodies and found a package of these crank bait blanks. I decided to continue with my fascination with pumpkinseeds and had it.

Actually they didn’t turn out too bad in spite of a couple f ups. The gill dots got too close to the eyes and I was hoping to have a bit more of the bright yellow towards the rear of the bellies and ahead of the tails. Noted and noted. Next time, eh?

I’m pretty happy with them and I can’t see the fish giving a rip about my little screw ups.

These guys will fish between 12 and 15 feet on mono… according to the label. We’ll see.

Anyway, this is this weekend’s escapade with paint.

Dang that mottling looks good on there. I havent tried any patterns like that yet. Probably will be the first thing I try after summer fishing is done.

Use a chunk of sponge. I cut up a yellow sponge shaped like a half moon. It’s porous enough to get a decent mottle when dipped in some paint on a flat surface. I dip then tap on a piece of newspaper to get rid of excess paint then tap the bait. Practice a little before you dive into the bait. My chunks of sponge are about an inch square on the surface I dip in the paint. I use a square of glass for the paint and pour out enough to make a puddle then spread it out so it’s not real thin but not very thick either. When you’re done painting with the sponge, squeeze any left over paint out in a paper towel then rinse a bit in cool water , squeeze the excess water out and let dry. If the sponge surface gets clogged with paint or gets funky, just use a scissors and cut it off.
