Pulling Otter sled down the road?

Just got a wheeler for ice fishing, and am hoping to use it to get out on lake just down the paved asphalt road. The access is about 3500 ft away (according to google maps).

I have an otter cabin with hyfax that I am looking to tow down the road, there and back plus whatever fishing I end up doing on the lake.

Will the otter/hyfax hold up to regular trips over the course of a few seasons? I’ve typically towed my otter only on the lake or brief stints across pavment/gravel, and the hyfax looks more or less new after a few years.

Wondering what other people’s experience with the otters is like when they do a little bit more towing along and on the roads.

i have the hyfax installed on an otter sled, I found them to be quite soft, yes they do protect for quite a while the sled itself, but as far as i’m concerned they seem to wear pretty fast on abrasive roads especially for prolonged periods where they would heat up. I would get a small cheap trailer like the one at Harbor Freight. You could even build some wheel skis for the trailer and tow the whole thing out on the lake.

Smitty Sled like CRC said, I’ve never built one but this summer I’m going to try and get something going, looks like there’s a lot of ways to make them just google it or search on the forums. Good luck.

I doubt they will hold up long pulling it a half mile one way on pavement. As others have said a wheeled smitty sled is the way to go. Can you drop the shack next to the lake and then drive back to the parking area and drive the wheeler back to the shack?

Go pick up a movers dolly at harbor freight. When you get to the ice lock it to a tree or sign. It will also help for sliding your shack around in the garage. You can get them for about $20.

I hate the sound mine makes going down the boat ramp would you guys suggest getting the hyfax for it?

This trailer is perfect for sleds being pulled by ATV or snowmobile, make some roll on skis and pull it out on the lake through snow to your hearts content. It’s light and small, and inexpensive, under $200.00 bucks

I have pulled mine close to that distance a couple of times when I couldn’t take the river out to the lake. Your hyfax will wear out very quick if you make it a habit of pulling on bare pavement that far.

Thanks guys. Thats kind of what I was thinking, but wanted to see if I was being too conservative with my equipment.
