I don’t have a kicker and my big motor goes too fast to troll effectively even against the current. Does anyone use a bucket with holes to drag in order to slow the boat down? If so, would you mind sharing how you rig it? I bought a drift sock but it’s worthless and I’m tired of draining the trolling motor batteries in just a few hours of fishing.
I did look at one of these but I’m not inclined to drill holes. This is just a one-year bandaid until I get a kicker next year
Get some trolling bags. These are not drift socks but very similar idea. Most drift socks aren’t made for trolling and will rip if you pull them trolling. I have trolling bags that I use occasionally from Amish Outfitters. Check these out. They are very well made and are popular on the great lakes.
Actually, after rereading your post I noticed you said trolling against current. I wouldn’t put anything out in the current. Too many things can go wrong putting out something into the current.
Drop your trolling motor in and turn it backwards. You only need 20-40% power to successfully control your boat speed. Not only that you get much better control over direction as well.
I did this for over 10 years when I owned my Crestliner. The only thing more effective is a kicker.
