So, I just bought a 3 point tiller to go on my ford naa, Unfortunately the pto, with a slip clutch doesn’t match up with the coupling from the tractor. Can the pto be switched end for end so the slip clutch is toward the tractor with out damaging anything?

Some pto shafts are a bear to get on. Do the splines not line up? I have had to resort to a hammer in the past. You may need to adjust the 3point arms?

I am guessing your tractors pto shaft is too small?? not uncommon on older tractors.
as horsepower numbers grew, the need for bigger and stronger shafts did also,so they went to a larger diameter 540 six spline shaft.

go to fleet farm or any farm store and buy the adapter, they still make them to this day.
if this isnt the case, let me know,I grew up on the older stuff and may be able to walk you though it.

I would not reverse the shaft unless its a clearance problem, make sure the clutch doesnt have a one way clutch in it,if it does,it will not work reversed,it will just spin.

The spines match up but the U joint has a little push button intent that is supposed to lock on to the shaft but there is no corresponding place for it to go into, just a bolt hole. Oddly enough if you flip the pto end for end it fits perfectly. I also thought about drilling a hole thru the u joint to match the shaft.

yes,you can drill the knuckle if need be,later pto shafts at the tractor had a full circle groove for the type of lock you have now.
if you drill it,do your best to make sure the hole is dead on,you dont want one drilled at an angle then have to hog it out to make it fit, best done on a drill press if you can.

Got it done. A quick run to fleet farm and an adapter fit perfectly. Cut a couple inches off the shaft to allow for the adapter and I’m tilling. Thanks every one
