Proud (and jealous) Father!

I know I’ve shown this elsewhere last year, but my 14yr old daughter got this back the other day! Big thanks to North Star Taxidermy in Nicollet for the beautiful work! And thanks again for the free mount as my daughter’s deer won their contest for biggest MN typical buck brought in to their taxidermy!

The 11pter scored 169 2/8″ (gross). It’s her first one and was the most memorable deer hunt I’ve ever been a part of without question.

And to boot, it’ll get registered in the Big Game Records of Minnesota as the highest scoring youth buck taken in Sibley County by firearms, along with a top 5 rank in Sibley County firearms all-time (from what we understand at this point).

Regardless of scores and accolades, it is the 4th most cherished moment of my life.

Gimruis….yep, November 9th at about 10:15am. 15 minutes before my daughter wanted to go home to warm up.

I’d say she warmed up pretty quick after that shot!

Thanks everyone! The story behind that deer is a remarkable one in my opinion. It’s a long story, but the short short version is (woods setting):

Here comes a big one from the northwest. Bang bang bang (shots from a hunter 1/2mi to our east). There goes the big one. Wait! The big one is coming back! Deer puts head to the ground at edge of iced waterway. ***thinking rapidly…it’s a giant! Its a giant! Don’t tell Madi it’s a giant!*** Buck starts to walk across the iced waterway. “Dad I’m gonna shoot” OK go ahead. BANG! Deer runs over ridge, we lose sight of it. I trample the makeshift ground blind running to where it was going, completely out of my mind. See deer fall down. Run up to deer. Yell incessantly “Madi you got it! You got it! You got it! Get over here! Madi comes, struggling to run in my old, big, orange, baggy coveralls like a kid whose pants were falling down. Sees Deer take last breath. DROPS TO HER KNEES IN A FULL-ON BAWL!!!! TEARS EVERYWHERE POURING DOWN HER FACE!!! Ohhhhh God…she just saw the deer die and she’ll never hunt again! “Are you alright?” “Yeah dad… I’m just so happy! It’s a happy cry! I prayed all night to get a deer!”
