For $30 and then the cost of 1lb’ers I’d rather get a 5lb tank.

I picked up a 5lb tank for $25 a couple of years ago and I can refill it for about the cost of a 1lb disposable green tank.

$25 for a 5lb is definitely unicorn pricing. But over the course of a couple seasons even a regular priced (~$40) tank is going to start paying for itself. And I haven’t had much luck with plastic items in the dead of winter, heck half the plastic on my old Buddy Heater was gone or broken before I gave it away last year, and I’m not one to abuse my stuff.
I had been on the fence between a 5lb and an 11lb this past year and then around Thanksgiving, Menards was doing 11% back on top of a sale price on the 5lb tanks. Basically got 5lb tank for about $31. Best I’d seen it so I grabbed one.
Now I need to find a local place to fill it that won’t rape me. The one place I did find charged me $18.50!!!!!!! I was pissed.
Might start refilling it myself from a 20lb tank which are easy to exchange near me.
I have been overcharged a couple of times when getting it refilled. The place I go to now is good about not overcharging. Ace
Wow I just looked at the prices of the 5lb tank. I should have bought 2 when I saw them on sale.
Uhaul is typically my go to place for propane. However I found Minnoco in downtown Shakopee that has excellent prices. They refilled an empty 33lb forklift tank for $18 a few weeks ago.
Not many options in my area that do fills. Everyone wants to exchange these days. The welding shop I ended up at didn’t even know they made 5lb. Immediately just wanted to swap me tanks until I showed them what I had.
Anyway, we’re deviating from the topic, sorry OP.
I’m confused where this would work out well?
It’s so easy to take off/put on those 1#s why bother for 2#s.

I was thinking the same thing.
However it is another gadget and I love gadgets. Just ask my wife, I got a butt load of ones that get used, and a butt load of ones that don’t.
Hey Eelpoutguy I’m a gadget guy too, that’s why this caught my eye. Luckily I also picked up a 5# tank at Menards so I can practice “catch and release” on this one.
Mr Heater should come out with a version that you could screw your Little Buddy heater to, larger base and lower center of gravity not to mention the longer run time. My Little Buddy cooks me out of my insulated Otter Cabin.
Something to think about in today’s world when buying used bottles. A friend bought a 11 pound tank at a garage sale. The guy said he found it and that it still had fuel in it. My buddy bought it but not knowing how long since the fuel was put in it he took it to a U-Haul for purging and a re-fill. When they hit the evacuation pump they found out the bottle was full of anhydrous….probably discarded by some nice meth cooker. Both of these guys could have been needing treatment for ammonia inhalation, or worse, but sneaked out of if luckily. When it comes to propane bottles, I get nothing but the new tanks when I need one and buy only from a certified filler if I need to exchange on for some reason. I think buying used from unknown sources is a bad idea.
Jamin,
South Suburban Rental in Newport has a scale and will refill 5# tanks. Plus they are going to get licensed to re-certify old tanks. They’ve been good to me.
