Prop Rebuild

I’ve got a 150 Mercury that my dad thinks needs the prop re-built because it is spun?

I have no idea about anything mechanical with the boat and we took it out last week and it was fine in the morning but when we went to move spots the boat revs up and then just tops out and can’t go faster than 7 mph. Motor is running fine otherwise.

Does anyone have an idea of anywhere that rebuilds props? I’m taking it to the mechanic this week but was looking for some other options.

I’m in NE by the way but get to SD and MN every few months.

I can’t recommend anywhere local to you, but I’ve used PropMD for my last few repairs (DOH!), and I’ve been quite happy with them. They’re located in Plymouth, MN, but you can ship your prop to them.

You’ll probably want to buy a new prop, too, unless you have a spare prop or don’t mind being boatless for a bit.

If you can, remove the prop. A lot of merc props have a plastic hub that acts as the sacrificial part if you hit something hard enough. Could be you only need to replace that.

Another way to check for a spun hub is to make a mark the spans the prop and hub. Then, go out and run it. If the hub is spun, the marks will no longer line up after you run it.

Sounds like you just need a hub kit. About $50

It’s pretty simple to tell if you have a spun hub. Which it sounds like you do. Most any prop shop will replace the hub. Or buy one and press it in your self

The Merc hubs are easy to install, use appropriately sized socket and rubber mallet, pound away. Also how I service my sled bearings because I’m lacking a press in my garage. Works fine
