Prop pitch

Quick question, I just moved to Minnesota from Colorado and and was curious what degree prop is most commonly used at this elevation. I have a Lund Tyee with a 200 verado and my boat mechanic in Colorado had mentioned getting a less aggressive prop for lowers elevation. Anyone have in information around this? Thanks in advance.

The same prop won’t work on every boat. In fact I’ve had the same model motor and boat and the prop pitch was still different. I’d recommend Prop MD out of the Twin Cites. They let you try props until you find the one that works best for you. That way you can get a prop that fits your exact needs. Top end… or hole shot… and max RPM’s. Good luck.

You’re on the right track but I believe this is backwards. Since there’s more oxygen at MN elevation vs CO, an outboard will produce more HP at a given RPM and can more easily turn a more aggressive prop so you should be going up in pitch number – say if you’re running a 19 pitch in CO, maybe you can run a 21 or 22 in MN and get similar results.

Agree with Joe too, on-water testing is the only way to go. The two places in MN I’d use are either Prop MD in Plymouth or Ricky at Brainerd Props. Both have exchange programs and are very good to work with. Hope this helps, good luck.

What pitch are you running now? I’d guess somewhere close to a 15 for Colorado. I also think that a 21 would be a good place to start and water test for max rpm per motor rating, Each pitch number is worth between 200 – 300 rpm.

With a Verado your current set up may work just fine since it’s super charged. In Minnesota a 17 or 19 pitch prop is quite common.
