What you need can vary widely.
First, is your boat titled? You can find out by looking at your DNR registration card, there will be an item on there that says “titled” and a Y or N.
IF you have a title, you MUST find it and have it available to transfer the ownership to the new owner. There is no legal way around this requirement despite what online experts or your brother in law may tell you.
Secondly, if you took out a loan to buy the boat, you must have the lien release from the lender.
Then you need to also transfer the registration on the boat AND the registration on the trailer.
People get dazed and confused since MN went to a so-called “permanent” registration on trailers. It’s only permanent in the sense that the named owner does not every have to renew it. A different owner needs to transfer that registration to his/her name.
The best thing to do is to go with the buyer to the DMV and together do EVERYTHING that is required all at once. If there’s any missing paperwork, they will tell you exactly what you need to round up, sign, etc.
Do as much rounding up of paperwork as you can before you put the boat up for sale. You should at the very least have found the title (if needed), the lien release (if needed), the DNR registration card, and the trailer registration card or information.
There are a LOT of oddball variations and add-ons to this info. For example, larger multi-axel trailers can have a separate title from the boat, so you can (and I have) had to manage two separate title transfers to sell one boat/trailer. It pays to stay on top of your paperwork and be very organized when it comes to boats.
