Pretty Fish

Just got back from our annual float trip to Arkansas targeting brown trout. Man, those fish are special. Besides their aggressive nature and fighting abilities, the colors and markings on some of those trout alone would make them worth pursuing. They are probably some of the prettiest fish that swim in our waters.

Sometimes there’s a minute or two delay in the photos showing up.

BUT those are some nice looking fish Brian! You have some wall hanging photos there!

This is a tailrace fishery and at one point a school of threadfin shad got pulled thru the dam. Hundreds of dead and injured shad started floating and drifting downstream. What had been a fairly quiet bite up till that point suddenly became a feeding frenzy. Surface explosions were occurring seemingly in all directions. We were hooking and catching fish one after the other for about a half an hour, until all the shad got flushed down river or eaten. In hindsight, we should have motored downriver and kept pace with that wave of dead and dying bait – and the maelstrom that occurs when trout meet them.

That would have been cool to see, but no time for taking videos!

Since getting back home to MN, I’ve caught some other fish and think it’s interesting to compare their relative beauty.

Hey now, while catfish are much less pretty when compared to trout, they also smell worse.
