I headed out to SD for work last Thursday with plans to hunt at my Dad’s for a couple days. Unfortunately my Dad was admitted to the ICU on Friday AM and obviously my plans changed. Luckily Dad was able to recover and get home today. I stayed on the farm and moved snow so they could didn’t have much to do when he was released. I suppose we got around 12 inches of snow, but it’s hard to tell since we had 30+ mph winds for two days.

Shortly after Dad was home I headed out this afternoon to do some sets as the wind was finally laying down. My first set was a bust. I decided to go for a drive and kill some time before I went to my last set. It’s amazing the amount of deer around here. I’ve watched over a 1000 deer on 4-5 different farms. Anyway, I got back to my Dad’s place and before I could get my stuff out of the pickup I could here dogs howling in our CRP and south across the road on the neighbors. I hustled to get setup. The snow was ridiculous and I wasn’t making very good time.

As I rounded the pheasant pens I noticed a coyote out in the open prairie, probably 600 yards. It saw my pickup and wasn’t too happy and trotted off just to far to shoot. About then I see another dog coming out of our trees. I guessed it at 500 yards. I knew the Hornady Superperformance would drop about 8 inches. I held right on the top of it’s back and let it buck. Nailed it!! Best shot of my life.

I’m going to hunt again in the AM then I’m headed back to the cities. Hopefully I can get one or two more in the AM.

    He’s shooting the freaky-flat .22-250. Yeah! Ain’t no yote far enough. . .

Nice shootin’ Tex. You just saved about 100 pheasants with that shot.

The shot was lucky. I’ve never shot this rifle that far and I apparently was not thinking clearly when I said it would drop 8 inches above.

At 100 yards off the lead sled, I was putting nice groups together at 2 to 2.5 inches high. This round should drop approximately 29 inches at 500 yards. So, I think I got lucky holding just over it’s back….

Either way, I’m pretty proud of the shot and will continue to work on getting better and more comfortable out past 300. You can tell the energy out at 500 sure isn’t much. I couldn’t find an entrance hole hardly. Although it did enough to break the front shoulder and put the dog down within 20 yards of the point of impact.

I hope to get out this weekend for a hunt or two in the Mn woods.

Looking at the charts you just posted John, I’d guess you’re zeroed closer to 300yds than not. Therefore, your drop at 500 wouldn’t quite be 29″. Probably more like 15-20. If you accept the 15, that would equate holding just over the back and still hitting your target.

Any way you slice it, WELL DONE!!! I had plans to get out this weekend but it seems the kidneys needed to move rocks instead! We’ll try again next weekend.
