You know what I’ve done this year Kirt? Gone heavier instead of lighter. I went up to 27 lb. Identical bait performance, just as many fish, but WAY fewer lost baits.

I have tried the lighter weights and have found them to break very easily. I too use the 27lb lead core and have one rod strung up with 36 for the real snaggy areas. If you try the light line let us know how it works for you.

Jason – Can you fit roughly the same amount of line on your reels with the heavier line? (18lb vs 27lb lead core)
How about sink rates? Are they pretty similar as well?

Hi Jason , what reel are you using and how much lead core are you putting on the reel . Looking to set some up on lead core to run in the prop wash. Puck is only 5 feet deep and want to run lead core in the wash of the prop.

Thanks for any help/ from Jeff.

    Boog,
Info that I recieved at a recent trade show, was that the lead is the same in both weights and you can get about 10 % more 18# on a reel vs 27#.If I am not mistaken,Jason uses Diawa sealine 47s.

That’s right on. I can fit 8 colors of 27 lb on my Sealine 47s (8 colors with a wrap of mono backing on the spool to prevent slipping). The lead on the inside is the same, the difference is in the sheath. You’ll notice it when tying knots especially.

Joel, I don’t think I’m perceptive enough to notice a difference. The 27 has a thicker sheath and is therefore a thicker line, so you’d expect to need more line to reach a particular target depth.

Most of my leadcore applications, whether fishing lakes or rivers, fall into two categories: (1) tick bottom occasionally, or (2) run baits ~ 1 color off bottom. In both cases, I run line out until I feel bottom, and then either reel up a little or a lot. When comparing 18 to 27, I may end up with a little more line in the water when running 27, but I believe the difference is small…certainly less than a color’s worth of difference, and more likely in the neighborhood an extra pass or two across the spool.

    Kirt,
I’ve been told that 18# gives you the best strength for the size of the line. I have also been told that the rule of thumb letting one color out for every 5 feet of depth is most accurate with 18 pound.

That being said I did use 15# for a while and didn’t notice measurable differences.

Thanks for the help Dean and Jason!
I’ve been running lead a lot more this year but there certainly are some things I’m still figuring out.

I’ve noticed that the 1′-5′ rule is a very general rule and extremely speed dependent. I prefer to go by what Jason said above. Always let out enough line to tick bottom first, then adjust from there.

Being a bit of a led core freak on the river as Dean can confirm. #18 is the best and check the brand because some coatings are different. Dean is correct #18 and #27 has the same lead. Also don’t count colors get a line counter. As well each rod will be different on the line counter by 10 to 30 feet on the same lure with led.

Haven’t made it out much this winter so I got my butt out this morning for a couple sets. Wind was blowing pretty hard from the south great for the stand location but right in my face. Man I needed some ski goggles, eyes were tearing terribly. Started out with couple howls then went to the tweety. Expecting the yotes to work up through the ditch. Nothing had appeared when I looked to the east and there he was sitting there. I made my move while he was looking around and got set then he starts trotting in and stops for a head on 125 yrds and the ol 250 let out a bark. One more dog down. Made two more sets and nothing, hoping to get out for couple sets tonight.
