Got these photos and the below wording in an email. I’m wondering if they are real or internet myth and have made the rounds before? If real, quite the scenario ……

    Shot near Tomahawk WI.
These incredible photos were posted at Hiawatha Bar in Junction City.
    The
hunter is 6’1”. The wolf is 165lbs. The buck was shot as he was climbing
down his stand to admire the wolf. Both harvested somewhere between
Marathon City & Merrill. The hunter believes this to be the alpha male
    as
it dwarfed in size the 5 others in the pack that gave him shot
    opportunities.

I saw these pics back in November. I questoined the size to a buddy who workis with someone in the WI DNR and they said the wolf was 95lbs. Who knows. My brother has a dog that weighs 90 lbs and that wolf is way bigger than the dog.

I’ve received the same pics with a variety of different locations stories. Not too uncommon to hear of a 150-170# coming out of Alaska or Canada. But hey, if its on the internet, it has to be true!

Fake. Or at the very least the story is not real.

This story started about 4 years ago and makes the rounds during/after every deer season. I’ve had these pics come to me several times, each time there’s a different story attached. I remember Alaska, Canada, Wisconsin, and Michigan for sure. I think there might have been a Montana version as well.

BTW, you can never tell the “alpha male” simply by size. Alpha refers to behavior and social position, not size. Most predator biologists scoff at the term because there isn’t necessarily an alpha in each pack and even if there is, it’s often only an alpha female whereas the social structure of the males is much less clear.

Some years ago I spoke to a woman who had done extensive wolf research and specialized in wolf biology. She said that she wished that the vast majority of what people think they “know” about wolves was actually both factual and true.

People tend to anthropomorphize a lot, especially when it comes to wolves. As we saw in the recent hunting debate when wolf cuddlers brought up the theory that hunting wolves would potentially kill off “elders” and therefore produce roge gangs of juvenile delinquent wolves because there would be no firm hand (paw) to guide them.

My dog, Floyd, is a 145 lb great dane, and he’s bigger than that wolf (not to mention that wolf has a lot more fur to make it look bulkier). Nice wolf, but not as big as the story says.

That’s a cool pic. The kid can almost walk under that dog.
