Decoys?

Anyone use them for yotes and if so, what measures are you using for storage/scent control? I just picked up a yote decoy to try and help with my high pressure area efforts and I’m wondering if you keep it in a scent bag, wash it/spray it with scent elimination products, or…..???

I’ve used many different decoys over the years. I will spray them with scent killer spray and carry them in a back pack. I will treat the stuff the same way I do my bow hunting gear. Of all the decoys sitting on the shelf the one I use the most and seems to work the best is an arrow with a turkey feather attached to it. Works great and easy to carry.

Do you use a turkey distress call as well then? Thanks for the info!

I’m doing some research on this very subject. I feel my miss this week would have been less likely had the yote been focused one something besides the caller. Of course, I’ve read a lot of negative things about a decoy also.

My Dad’s fuel guy hunts dogs all winter long and gave me this advice the other day. You need to be able to shut off the decoy at times if the coyotes don’t respond favorably to it. Now this is just one hunters opinion, but one I know is experienced. I’m leaning towards this decoy right now.

    Fox Pro Black Jack

Also considering the Primos stray cat.

I do use turkey every now and then, but cotton tail is the most used. The arrow and feather are there to give the yote something to focus on other then me. It works great and they seem at times to be completely fixed on that feather.

Is the feather attached loose so a light breeze will move it?

    Kooty,

I went with that Lone Howler decoy. I’ve seen Randy Anderson use “Phoebe” with good success in some of his videos. Where I’m chasing, there’s a lot of human presence and the yotes seem to be wary of any distress calls so my thought was to let them see another yote and see if it might help bring out the more educated ones.

Mills Fleet Farm has the Lone Howler decoy on sale this week for $69 .99, plus I had a $20 gift card to throw at it, so I went for it. Trying to get my head on straight before I put it in the field, cuz I don’t want to teach them anymore than they seem to already know!

I also will use a torn up muskrat pelt or a strip of rabbit fur. I use some mono, maybe 10# clear that is about 12-16″. I have a snap swivel on each end to I can hang it on a fence or limb as well.

That sums it up. My setup is the same. As for the Lone Howler I have one and HATE it. Complete junk. Pain in the to carry out and in the very cold they make more noise setting up then I make walking in. The legs don’t stay in the leg holes and if the bungee inside slips putting the legs in, you may as well move to a new spot. If anyone wants one I will cut them one sweet deal on one used only 3 times. Looks like new.

Funny you should mention the noise! In my assembling, my first thought was, “Safety or no safety, I’m not putting this together in the field!” I am going to look into making some quieting modifications regardless.

How much you want for yours? If my modifications work, I know my nephew will want one too. Send me a pm!
