I’m jealous. The wife is traveling the rest of the week and I want to get out. So…. I’ve never hunted at night. It’s always been illegal where I live.

Does night hunting require a special light or scope?

Any tricks you experienced guys want to share with a rookie?

Here in WI, we can only use a light “at the point of kill”; not as a search/identification light. I’m very selective on sets and where/how to set up based on the combination of wind + snow cover + Moon lit + access to the spot. my experience on full moon or near full moon is how leery they are to enter a field exposed (as if coming out in daylight). I like the moon lit areas to illuminate suspected brush or fence rows- anything that improves my vision. Remember, they can see exceptionally well at night. Camoing in still really matters.

That 30mm tube on your Burris will really help with your night hunting. Oh, and I like to sit for a few extra minutes before calling to let my eyes adjust.

I’m gonna go knock on some local doors around my place. Lots and lots of dogs around. I hear them all the time and see them often enough.

Randy summed it up pretty good in my limited experience dogs in our area are much tougher then what they have out West. Just starting out depending on area don`t get too upset if it takes 20 sets or more to see your first Dog.

Went out for one set the other night after the snow a big goose egg. I did learn how badly out of shape I am in. Warm boots, warm clothing pack and rifle with 10 inches of snow. Good thing it will get easier….at least I hope.

Well, I thought of something else this AM. I don’t have much for snow camo. I need to find some cover ups. I have some old cover ups, but I’m guessing they will be a bit small since I bought them over 10 years ago. Still in the package.

Snow covers at an Army surplus store. Just about the only snow “camo” I use. Plus they are cheap

Tyvek suits can be bought at any home improvement store. They are cheap and throw away and don’t fit guys my size, but for a couple bucks, they work for the short term.
