I was out this morning scouting for turkey locations, and couldn’t help but playing with a few calls. Last night I heard a few chattering in/around the marsh in the background. Sounded more like coyote pups than fox. I knew it was still WAY too early for pups to be out. Anyways, I picked up a few new calls out of a bargin bin and had to try one out. This was a Buck Gardner call with a combo squeek and rabbit. About 2 minutes passed and one ran out into the field and another hung up on the brush line along the fence at about 300 yrds out. I reversed the call around and squeeked a little. That really peaked the curiousity of the one in the field. It began to zig/zag back and forth trying to locate the sound. Probably had it in the field for about 7 to 8 minutes trying to find me. The second in the brush was a lot smarter. It crossed the fence and made its way to me from the other side of the brush line. At about 40 yrds through the grass it picked me out and knew to get its rear end out of dodge. The more curious one still worked its way all over the field after i quit calling.
It was too bad that I couldn’t have put this one out of its misery. The signs of mange was disgusting. No hair on its tail and could see raw patches on its hind end. It won’t be around for very long….and most likely is infecting its mate with mange as well
Not a bad morning though for being in shorts and a t-shirt.
