Finding a good sound….

I recently downloaded a few more sounds for my foxpro and had to go check them out.. Since I hit the same areas frequently, I’m always looking to change things up a bit. Mid range tones tend to work better in the general area near my home, and I always want a variety of different sounds to use along with my hand calls.
The question comes up frequently about which sounds to use. Every area or region may have a tone of a sound that will work much better. We all know its not always as simple as plopping down, turning the ecaller on, and they come running. One of the key things I look for when I try a new sound is how the birds respond to it. If I have crows, ravens, hawks, or a eagle come in to investigate; or get very excited….I know I have a good sound for that location.
Here’s a quick minute vid on a sample of testing out a new sound.
The set: small wooded lot with set-aside field behind it. I’m facing North West, with an East wind. My vantage point is from on a rock pile about 250 to 400 yrds from the woods. This had been an awesome location for east winds over the last several years. So far this year, I’ve only taken a dozen coon out of the woods and passed on a red fox twice here. Very liitle sign of coyotes this fall/winter around here on my “back-yard” stomping grounds.

That is one raspy rabbit sounds more like a Jack then cottontail. Now if Yotes would of responded like the crows.

I am new at calling Yote hunting but in our area this year the sign and sounds of Yotes is way down. As you mentioned before the winter is mild and food is easy to come by, so I believe they are not moving as much or as far. I have done 11 sets and no takers yet.

I walked into the kitchen for coffee, and saw a mid-morning red in the field across the road from my house. I pulled out a call and started whining to it. It lifted its head to look my way, and completely ignored me. When i got the binocs on it, I saw it had something in its mouth. Couldn’t tell what. But every fox I have watched in this field is like watching people rolling away form a FREE buffet dinner.
