    Hey James,

I guess even Mille lacs fisherman can catch Rainy Walleyes!! LOL!! Nice meeting you Brad!! I might PM you with a few formulas as you have me thinking (Which should scare you). James I think without letting the cat out of the bag we could target those big pike!!! Yes bring that 10ft Beckman net also! (Not quite 10, but pretty big!) Great seeing you boys again!!, and maybe you can let poor Paul get into some action this fall while your up. Take Care Buddy!!

I’m still a bit in awe at the quality of the walleye bite up there. 40 – 50 fish a day is not unusual. Many of those fish will be over 20″ with a nice smattering of 24 – 25 inch fish that fight like absolute beasts for their size. I can honestly say I have never, ever, caught lake walleyes that fought as hard as these fish did. And it is August, for pete sake. While nearly all other lakes have slowed down for the “dog days” Rainy is consistently producing a great bite, day in, day out.

Chris and I will be filming a plastics show up there in October. It will be interesting to see how some of our refined river plastics techniques work on Rainy’s lake fish.

I won’t forget about the walleyes but I do plan to spend some time hitting them both.

James, James, James as we grow older we grow to appriciate the finer things in life. Time to put down the funny upside down rods and reels. Time to go cut a 2″ tree limb, tie on some rope and go “fishin” for the big boys.

Tell Chris you are done playin’ and want to to go trophy slimin’!!

Glad you had a great trip. Rainy is really quite the lake.

I’ll bring my muskie gear and a float tube. I think I saw Babe do a show that way with sturgeon.

A 25 lb piker should get me up on plane!

I don`t have an Ecaller yet and have been using open reed howler hand calls. I am really struggling with getting the short bark right before the howl. When I do it it just dose not sound right. Any suggestions? I know it is hard to explain over the internet, but how are you doing the short bark?

Funny I too practice driving down the road….ear plugs very good idea…..no wonder I can never hear what the wife says.

What open reed calls are you using? Hot Dawg, Lil’ Dog… other? I say “hit” to get the yip at the beginning of a howl. I use more of my lips on the tone board too. I use my teeth for the howl. Some of the big open reed calls take a TON of force to get them to sound good. I have a Hot Dawg and use it mostly with the bell off the Lil’ dog. It helps some. I consider the Hot Dawg to be more for an advanced caller. I can get it to sound good using the A, B and the high side of C on the tone board but low C and D are just too much for me. I can get close to the same sound out of my Lil’ dog.

I have a Primos howler that is a little easier to start with. I don’t recall the model of it. But its about 7 or 8 years old now. Very easy to control with the diaphram like a duck call. Keep in mind the sound you hear at point blank range isn’t the same frequency that the dogs hear at 500 yrds away.
When I bought my first Hot Dog, I was out on my deck at my farm. Spent about 20 minutes on and off getting frustrated that I couldn”t get the sound in like I thought it should be. The next morning, I saw I had called in two dogs to the edge of the yard/field. Just tons of tracks where they had paraded back and forth in the edge of the field. I have a sodium vapor light on my pole barn, and you could see where they were just where the light fell off. It taught me that the sound you hear might not “sound right”, but is the perfect range.
I know a lot of guys control their calls differently, so ultimately you need to find works best for you. (generic answer). But trial/error sometimes is the best teacher.

Good luck and don”t give up!

That is a very good point Randy. I didn’t like the sound of the Primos double cottontail and double jackrabbit until I was hunting with my brother. We set up about 60 yards apart when he started his sequece I was amazed at the sound of his calls. When we finished I asked him what calls he was using. The next day I ordered both calls.

No creeks up where I’m at, but the dogs also don’t get much pressure from callers. So I’m hoping even a rusty novice like myself can trick one in. I might have to go borrow my buddy’s fox pro and give it a try.
