So I live on a big pond surround by woods and swamp and usually have a couple residential packs of ‘yotes. Last night we heard them start howling and sound like they were right on the other side of the pond so my brother and I scrambled to get dressed and set-up. Our “setup” was laying prone on our dock in the cattails 60 yards from our back door. After one sequence one pops up straight across on the ice, then another, and another. 5 different coyotes appeared, spread out and started “driving” our pond straight to us. Well long story short… I rushed the shot and missed.

My question is when should I give it another try? I can completely change my setup and get back on the ridge and use a different call but I just don’t know how long I should give it before trying again. What would you guys do? This was the first time I ever called to them and like I said there are two different packs and a bunch of fox. I tthink I will be able to get them again.

I think it would be best if I showed you…. That sounds like a fun night.

I like to let mishaps go for a few days, maybe 3 to 5 or so. A key factor is how large of a range do they go? If they make their “rounds” in 2 or 3 nights…or 5 to 7 nights will make a huge difference in how frequent they will come in.

i would wait till i heard or seen them again. its alot easier to call coyotes that are up and active than when they are resting or holed up. i’ve had coyotes 200 yards from me laying down and have watched them not move a muscle with someone throwing everything in the book at them. i think they get this way when they have been called at to much. if this becomes the case i like to set up well before sun up when that sun rises i’ll go to calls i know they haven’t heard before. sometimes the best call on pressured coyotes is a soft squeker. but if you have the e caller option the pup distress finishes more wary coyotes than anything i use. not sure why it works so well, but by far my go to call when the coyotes start getting smart
