Tonight, I decided to head out to a nice piece of property that I haven’t called yet this year. It’s a bit of a walk, so I had the chance to survey the property for tracks and wasn’t disappointed. When I got to the area that I wanted to set up I noticed something was missing… my Minaska! I left the dang thing in my truck. (I wanted to try the hand calls a bit this year, but this was getting ridiculous.) So, not wanting to waste a great night I set out the Critter, sat down and took a break, and started calling. I did a few series and studied the landscape for awhile. After my next series I caught movement at the far east edge of the field, about 350 yds away. I knew it was a coyote so I pulled up the scope and watched him as he walked across the narrow opening to the wood’s edge. I called a few times and he started trotting my way. He worked his way to the south for a bit, then moved to the north. Each time he stopped I made a couple of soft calls to keep him coming. At about 250 yds he must have caught sight of the Mojo Critter because he got on his back legs and started “pogo sticking”. It was one of the funniest things I’ve seen in a while. I kept watching the show in the scope, giving soft calls when necessary but working hard not to get busted. When the coyote got to about 200 yds he zeroed in on the decoy and started coming straight in. At about 150 yds he stopped and gave me a nice, broadside shot so I centered the crosshairs on his shoulder, let out half a breath, and squeezed… whop!, another dead coyote. This was probably one of my favorite hunts so far. It was amazing watching the action in the scope the whole time. I’m also loving the 6×45, I’ve only killed two coyotes with it but the 6mm, 65 gr. V-max seems to hit them like a roll of quarters.
