Hard to say nothing may actually be wrong with it… I know my 96-97 40 horse Johnson, was a little tempermental to start, as it seems to me all carburated 2 stroke motors are, kind of gotta figure the personality of the motor and what it wants, usually I’d bring the idel lever up somewhere around midway and make sure the primer bulb is primed up properly, and Gas tank vent open, and would fire right off and run perfect for me. I later sold it to my cousin who has issues getting it to run and start, I know he’s learned her temperment now.

You may just need a little more time to get to know her, new plugs properly gapped shouldn’t hurt you any either.

sounds like the carbs are pluged up i would pull them out and give them a thurough(sorry bad speller here) cleaning with carb cleaner and a tooth brush. make sure to pull out all the jets and needle and floats. if you are not comfortable doing carbs i can help you out

Just an update, Thanks for the advice guys. I took both carbs off and sprayed the [censored] outta then with seafoam and put in new plugs. She fired up and ran for about 30 min. Took her to the lake this morning just to open up the motor a bit and it ran fine all morning. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Good to hear you got it sorted out

Personally I always run seafoam in every tank of gas in my boat, 2 main reasons, one it decarbonizes the motor and keeps the motor/fuel system clean, and it stabilizes the gas for up to 2 years, I heard gas these days is rather volitile and starts breaking down into varnish in a couple weeks time, I rather have none of that in my motor.

    Cheap “insurance” in my opinion.
