Well after a beautiful night out galloping around the country chasing predators, Hunter Dan, myself and another buddy are getting closer to finally having a break out day….
We made four sets last night, and called in a fox and coyote and still have nothing to show for it. It was extremely bright and quiet out and i thought for sure that it was going to be our first night of multiple kills. First set we hike in on some CRP public land about 1/2 mile and set up. We had a smorgasborg (sp) of guns with, I was toting my SBE 2 with dead coyote, hunter dan had his .204 and Danny had a shotgun and his .22, we were ready. Third our fourth series of calling I hear Hunter Dan get real quiet and start lip squeaking, ok heart is pounding and im waiting for a boom…..nothing. When we meet up, him and Danny tell me that they had a fox come in behind them from across the road and they couldnt see it for the life of them. They could smell it and hear it, just couldnt see it for the shot. Lesson learned, if we had sat up where we were going to originally it would have been a dead animal, use the vantage points, especially at night. They animals will come if they are in the mood.
Second set produced nothing.
Third set Hunter Dan and i set up 80 yards into the swamp, calling to some islands, and put Danny out behind us over looking the cornfield to catch anything that swung wide. First series, Hunter Dan says he heard something behind him along the woods. Im looking so hard my eyes start to water and eyelashes are freezing. All of a sudden i hear a noise that i no very well from having a dog. Toenails on ice. There was a snowmobile track that ran past us from the swamp, going into the field. This animal is on it and is backdropped against the woods and i cant see it….unbelievable….im going crazy…sat there for awhile longer and nothing. I thought for sure it would have came down that trail to investigate. We get up and sure enough fresh coyote tracks circled us all the way and we never saw the little bugger.
Made one more set that produced nothing.
All in all a great night, i would have liked to hunt more but Danny had to work and it was already 12:00.
Thus far in the last three days the animals have been winning, but tonight is going to be a different story. We are going to break out sooner or later.
Hunting our best property tonight, then off to Duluth tomm to hammer on some fish.

Quick question for everyone. It seems like our sets at night are a lot longer than daylight sets. Anybody else experience this???
