So I went out last sat. night and it was bright. I could see very well. I tried hunting in a couple different spots with no luck.

How loud do you make your first few calls?

How long will you sit before you move?

There was tracks everywhere, But nothing to show for.

What are the best calls to do at night rabbit and a pup distress?

What calls do you like and/or what has paid off for you.

Is the full moon not the best time to go? Then when is?

    Thanks for the help
    Ben

I like to sit for a few minutes and let things settle down first. My first calls are usually very soft, typically a mouse squeeker or a soft puppy whine.

Depends on the terrain. If it is a really wooded setting, usually 20 minutes and then move. If it is open country, 30 minutes minimum and up to 45 minutes. A wooded setting allowsyou to move less of a distance between calls. A wide open terrain, I move up to a mile before making a nother set. Sound travels less in woods so you can get away with moving 3-400 yards.

Any call can be effective anytime of the day or night. Rabbit works, but is overrused. I like fawn bleats, puppy shines, but still use rabbit. I also like to howl anytime of the year, but now is a great time for howling.

I am a huge fan of Primos brand calls and have the most luck with them. I have a Raspy Coaxer, a cottontail, Regulator 14 (which I absolutely love), these are all Primos. My howler is a Knight & Hale and is a great call.

The Full Moon is as good of a time as any to go. The extra light helps you to seethem, but it also allows them to see you even better. I like daytime calling myself.

AmWatson is right on. The only thing I myself do is use electronic calls. I do use some mouth calls but like elec. calls better. The advantage is I can set my call 100 yards away from me and take the attention away from me. Mouth calls however give you the ability to mix up your sounds to the way you want them to sound for the conditions that are presented. You cant go wrong eather way. The other thing is don’t get down because you go out several time and don’t see or hear one. They are a very smart animal and some times you realy have to work to get one. But its all worth the work you put into it. Keep your eyes open and do alot of looking with binoculars a 10-12 power is all you need. This will help pick them up from the tree lines and brush. Keep in mind wind direction and your scent. Good luck stick to it and you will get one.

Thanks fellas I went out and bought a primos lil’ dog. I gave that a try and I am getting the hang of it.

I like the idea of being able to set the electric caller like 100 yards away from me.

but for now I will give this a whirl.

Thanks for all the advice. It is much needed.

Still looking for my first one. I will stick with it and see what happens.

    Thanks
    Ben
