Whacked another one…

I’ve been doing some calling this week right before dark w/ some good results. Went out Tuesday night w/ my 10 yr. old son. It was blowing pretty good and snowing but I thought “what the heck” and went out anyway. We were calling to a marsh w/ some brushy ravines feeding into it when I noticed motion to my left at 40 yds. The coyoted disappeared into a steep ravine and I figured he would pop up close… very close. Sure enough he pops up less than 20 yds to my left looking the other way. I’m just picking him up in the scope and he bolts… 2 quick shots and 2 misses. After the fact my son said that he saw me bringing up my gun and spun to the left to see what was up. When he saw the yote it spooked him pretty good, he said he couldn’t believe how close it was. Should have been a dead coyote but the excitement on my kid’s face after the experience was priceless. I think he’s hooked and I can’t wait until he can carry a gun.

Tonight I went out and called in a pair. Dropped the first one at 120 yds and missed the second on the run at about 160 yds. I had only been calling for about 5 minutes… great night.

Great job! Im heading out this morning to try and spot a fox or coyote to whack also. I see you got that new remington r-15. How do you like that?

Thanks,… I really like the R-15. It has been very accurate and the follow up shots are great. I wasn’t sure if I’d like the AR-15 platform but with the shorter barrel and collapsible stock it’s a dream to carry and handles really well.
    Good luck…

Nice yote. Anyone know if their hides are worth anything this year?

Seriously, you can hardly give them away this year. Sounds like NAFA will either be holding them over or having a fire sale to get rid of what they have. The January sale is coming up soon, so that will tell the tale of their value

Here is a photo of the one I got tonight. I love hunting these things. Everything happens so fast you got to be on your “A” game alot. I only was calling for 4 mins. when she came in. Was the first of the year and took her at 14 yards on a flat out run.

What’s your calling routine/setup? Do you typically use an electronic caller? Are they legal here for ‘yotes? Can’t remember.

I’ve got some that I’d love to clean out, and I’ve got plans to set out some beef scraps for them after my brother butchers some steers. Calling would be more fun, and I’d like to try this method first however. It’s been years since I’ve called in a coyote, and I usually just used a rabbit squealer or fawn bleat back in the day.

I use a fox pro FX3 and coyote howls are what give me the most action. This one however came in on a cotton tail distress. In the area I’ve been hunting there is good number of fox in the area so coyote howls can’t be used if you want any chance at fox.

I use an electronic call w/ remote as well. It helps to get the sound away from you a bit and the sound selection on most units is awesome. Electronic calls are legal in Wisconsin, I’m pretty certain they’re legal in Minnesota as well but I haven’t seen the regs. Good luck out there…

Nice job, bassmaster… I agree, you can’t beat the sight of these guys charging in to the call, or popping up out of nowhere. It’s an absolute blast!

Thinking about a lone hen turkey decoy in the center of a field, along with some assembly yelps and loud cutting.

I can’t think of a spring when I haven’t encountered at least a handful of coyotes stalking my decoy or simply coming towards my calling. Last year we rolled two and I flung arrow(s) (yes, arrows plural) at a pair that would simply not leave.

Will report back. With this deep snow, I’m sure turkey will be back on the menu. This is probably the only reason I’d kill a coyote. For picking on my turkeys.
