    .243 here.
I would like to downsize a bit with another smaller cal. as an option. The .243 has the power to really reach out and tag one though when necessary. Plus, they make so many good off-the-shelf bullets now, that I can get down to a nice small bullet without reloading it myself anymore. ….A .223 would really be a nice option though.

Ruger 223 shooting 55gr., 270 shooting 90gr hand loads. 204 shooting 55gr. The 204 is my favorite gun. All I’m waiting for alittle snow and some butt cold weather.

The 220 Swift is an outstanding round at 4000 FPS with a 50 grain projectile! spendy to shoot and tough to reload due to the speed and fact that it must be 220 Swift brass to reload, cant neck down or use any other brass. .223 is the cheaper option that will kill dogs(yotes) as well. on some yotes

I shoot a 22-250 handloaded to a tad over 4000 fps. What is also effective is my Rem Supermag 12 ga loaded with 3 1/2″ Mag 00 buckshot as it will roll’em out to darn near 100 yards.

Ruger Mini-14 Ranch Rifle in .223 topped with a Leupold VX-1 3-9×40, this gun is a lot more accurate than most people give it credit for, plus you can really through some lead out there with a 20 round clip added on .

I don’t think the accuracy of the .223 was ever in question, because they are tack drivers
The downfall they do have is long range ability. The 22-.250 and the .243 are hands down better than the .223 in that aspect.
But, the .223 is very accurate and much cheaper to shoot.
I have hunted with guys out West who used the Mini-14’s and they dropped a lot of coyotes out to 200 yards. The longer shots were better suited for the .250’s and .243’s.
I would love to have a .223 for coyote hunting in the Midwest where you rarely have 400+ yard shots

I was refering to the fact that some people assume that a mini-14 won’t group better than a dinner plate at a 100yds. I have however found it to group quite well and it is also a dream to carry and a joy to shoot.

I will completely agree with you on that statement
A lot of the time, it is the shooter that is to blame, and not the firearm

I am considering a 17hmr for IA. fox and coyotes. What do you fellows think of this caliber?

Ok for fox out to about 100yds. Not big enough for normal coyote shots. You’ll be watching quite a few wounded run away.
It is a nice caliber for close shooting though.
    Just my opinion.

.243 right now, I am planning on saving some money to purchase a nice .22-.250 or a .223 for my new varrmite rifle…

The 17 is a good fox gun but I wouldn’t shoot a yote with one. Sure you can kill one with it but I think you will wound more with it. 223,204, 243 and the 22-250 are great guns. I have both the 223 mini 14 and the ruger 204. I prefer the 204 over them all. A 270 with a 90gr bullet works great too. Here in northern wisconsin I have a hard time getting a shot over 150 yards, most are around 50 and under since I hunt the timber and swamp bottoms.

I was going to tery some yote hunting but only have an 06 or 7mm wsm. Can I get a small enough grain bullet in the 7wsm to make it work?

    Define “Make it work”.
Do you plan to do anything with them once they are shot?
I am going to stay off my moral high ground on this and give you both sides of my thoughts, leaving my opinion unbiased.
If you plan on killing them and leting them lay, you can use any calibre you want.
If you plan on keeping the hide to sell or tan, there is going to b a heck of a hole rendering the hide next to worthless on the fur market and you would have to do some sewing if you intend to tan the hide
