Do you think this was a true Grey Fox, or a Red in a color phase? Very curious. We have some grey ones her also, not as numerous as the reds. But the true Greys can climb trees and I might be wrong but I think they are an animal that mostly inhabits the western US. I occassionally call in a fox, but do not shoot them unless they look mangey or ill. Starting to see more fox again though, seems like there were a lack of them around here for ten years or so. We had a litter of them near out house this Spring, it was fun to watch the mother carry cats, rabbits, and squirrels back to the den. I am not going to mess with them at all, as far as hurting them. I lip squeaked the inexperienced kits within 8 feet of me earlier this year, it was neat. Even wearing a white t-shirt they came to me and then just looked. I could have grabbed one of them. Dumb kids. LOL. It was really neat.

Also pairs of coyotes are the best. Usually a race for the meal you are offering. They seem to throw caution to the wind, at least as far as coyotes go. I love it when two respond at once. Try this, hang a turkey feather tied with thread to a doll rod out in front of where you are calling. Even a gentle wind will move the feather. The coyotes will fix in on the moving feather and give you just a bit more time to work and shoot. Dont waste your money on expensive decoys that make funny mechanical noises, just use a feather. Make sure you use thread, heavier string will not allow the feather to flutter in the wind.

yeah, I’m sure it was a gray… I’ve got numerous trail cam pics of several, two in one pic on a couple of occasions. I think there are more grays around than people think, they are way more nocturnal and seem to tolerate(survive) the growing coyote population much better. Good tip on the feather, I’ll have to give it a try…

A few more things….if your hunting around sunrise or sunset, stay below the skyline or they’ll pick out your sillouette(sp)and the sun shining on the side of your face will stick out like a sore thumb. I call in mostly canyoned pastures with big pockets of cover here in there. I try to put myself where i can see the canyon bottoms coming from the cover. They dont always, but most times come into me on fencelines, cowpaths, canyon bottoms, or any other kind of “structure” leading in my direction. Well i had more but now ive forgotten so thats all for now
