Unbelievable!

I had the most unbelievable day today… I got out for the first time w/ the new Foxpro and called in a pair of ‘yotes this a.m…. unfortunately, they came in downwind and got into some brush not to be seen again. Then, tonight I went out again and on my first setup had a pair come within 20yds of me in the brush. They came in on my off side and I had some thick brush to shoot through so I held off, hopefully not educating them. My last setup, I called in a gray fox, had him at about 50 yds and missed (first time shooting w/ a light). I am extremely bummed about missing the fox, but I had an awesome time and can’t believe the action that I had today. Now I have to work on the execution aspect of the plan.

    good luck

STR8, Wow what a day! I’ve been trying for the last three seasons and have never called a yote in yet, not that I’ve spotted anyway. Last year I finally had a redfox come in and a had to wait him out because of brush, at 35 yrds an owl out of nowhere dive bombed the fox, the fox jumped up sideways and took off like a bat outta you know what. Last year I went to a predator clinic and the “pro” I remeber told us that a grey fox is the easiest of them to call back after a miss. just wondering if you tried again or called it a night? P.S. I did a one man 2 hour drive today for a fellow bowhunter and he had a bobcat come by. I’m in central MN and have never seen one. I’m going to recearch our regs and see if there’s a season!

That is a great day you had
Now you have the first of the season jitters out of the way so the next time we will be hearing about the coyotes you connected on
Now you got me excited to get out and try some calling. I have a few areas picked out, it is just a matter of getting out there.
    Congrats on the great day

Checking are you doing this at night or early AM or late PM. What kind of call is this, electronic or you blow the call. Gun being used a shootgun or rifle. I been wanting to try this. Do you drive around until you hear the coyote’s and the nset up or just know that they are in the area. larry

I will call anytime I can. I do not do a lot of night calling though. Early morning and late evening work as well as the middle of the day. It all depends on what time of the year it is. Other factors include temperature, amount of snow, and when you have time to go.
I set up in areas where I have seen sign or have seen actual coyotes. I don’t try to locate them by sound first.
As far as a firearm, shotguns as well as rifles can be used. Personally, I stick to a rifle (where legal), and I use either a .243 or a 22-.250.

Bird, I’ve been heading out at dawn and dusk using an electronic caller. Most of the time I carry a .223 but occasionally carry a scattergun. I may opt for this a bit more if I hunt areas w/ thick cover. Like Am said, I hunt areas where I have had sightings, or a fair amount of sign… snow makes scouting much faster but that’s pretty much a dream lately.

    good luck,

Thanks Am, … yeah, I couldn’t believe it… I think I was more surprised on the second pair than the first. Definitely changed my plans of picking up a new barrel for my Encore. I’m thinking that carrying a single shot for ‘yotes is like taking a nail clipper to a knife fight. I’ve been replaying things in my head quite a bit regarding setups and my actions to seal the deal… definitely keeps a guy thinking, that’s what makes it so fun. Next time I won’t let them get the drop on me.

    good luck,

    That would be awesome!
Speaking of them coming downwind, how much emphasis do you guys put on scent control?

I try to control scent the same if not more than deer. But, I am not one of those scent control freaks either. I basically just wash my hunting clothes in a scent free detergent and keep them in a tote. They can smell better than a deer, but I try to get set-up where I see them before they get downwind. Of course that isn’t fool-proof in our type of terrain, but you will never win them all anyways.

Fish, I do about the same as Am,… keep my hunting clothes clean and in a tote and always try to approach my setups from downwind or at least a crosswind…

STR8SHOOTER, what Fox Pro did you get ? I want to get a new one but I’m wondering about the price. I use an old piece of crap boom box now and it works for me but I want more volume and remote capabilities. Set-ups can be very frustrating and lots of times dont work out as planned cause there unpredictable critters. Sometimes I like to set up in the open with whites on and they come running right in looking for a meal and have no clue your there. They must feel more confident in the open instead of cautiously looking/searching through the cover for the noise/danger. I also have luck using a bait pile,no calling, and wait them out.

Hybes, I picked up the 416B at Cabela’s… their on sale now for $350.00 which is a pretty good price for a caller with the long range remote. What time of day are you calling most, dawn and dusk or after dark?

Do you think this was a true Grey Fox, or a Red in a color phase? Very curious. We have some grey ones her also, not as numerous as the reds. But the true Greys can climb trees and I might be wrong but I think they are an animal that mostly inhabits the western US. I occassionally call in a fox, but do not shoot them unless they look mangey or ill. Starting to see more fox again though, seems like there were a lack of them around here for ten years or so. We had a litter of them near out house this Spring, it was fun to watch the mother carry cats, rabbits, and squirrels back to the den. I am not going to mess with them at all, as far as hurting them. I lip squeaked the inexperienced kits within 8 feet of me earlier this year, it was neat. Even wearing a white t-shirt they came to me and then just looked. I could have grabbed one of them. Dumb kids. LOL. It was really neat.

Also pairs of coyotes are the best. Usually a race for the meal you are offering. They seem to throw caution to the wind, at least as far as coyotes go. I love it when two respond at once. Try this, hang a turkey feather tied with thread to a doll rod out in front of where you are calling. Even a gentle wind will move the feather. The coyotes will fix in on the moving feather and give you just a bit more time to work and shoot. Dont waste your money on expensive decoys that make funny mechanical noises, just use a feather. Make sure you use thread, heavier string will not allow the feather to flutter in the wind.
