If you are a beginner caller. Start with a closed reed call. Any of the rabbit distress calls from Primos is a great starter call. If you prefer an open reed call, I highly recommend the “Regulator” from Primos as well. I have 3 different calls from Primos that I absolutely have faith in, “Regulator”, “Raspy Coaxer”, and their cottontail distress call. I also have a few Knight & Hale calls, but Primos is my go-to calls.

the hand calls do work? So I don’t need to spend money on an electronic? That would be good to know.

I have both an electronic caller and a bunch of hand calls. To be honest, I love my hand calls more than I like my electronic caller. Here is why
Hand calls are more “personal”. What I mean by that is I can make sounds with more emotion in them. You can change the cadence, pitch, and volume at will. The e-callers are recordings of the same sound, over and over. The e-callers do work well at times, but hand calls are better in my opinion. E-callers are great for crows, coon, and bobcats. Hand calls are awesome for coyotes and fox calling. The “Regulator” call from Primos is probably my favorite. Depending on where you hold the reed in your mouth, you can make dying rabbit sounds to puppy whines.

Do you want to make distress sounds or coyote vocalizations? Both work year round. Do a search for Rich Cronk. The website might be http://www.cronkcustomcalls.com I have several of his calls, they are all good. His cow horn howler is my favorite. You will not get good resonate howls with a plastic call. The call maker is Rich Cronk from Council Bluffs, Iowa. He will also include an instructional tape with his calls upon request.

From what I gathered from the original post, this is a beginner caller. So, with that in mind, I intentionally did not mention coyote vocalizations Not that a beginner can’t use these calls, but starting out with a closed reed prey distress sound will give them a better chance at being successful.
Too many times, people try and use howls, yips, barks, ki-yi’s, and end up doing more harm than good and are unsuccessful and in turn usually drop out of the calling game.
Rich Cronk from what I have seen and read, makes some excellent calls as well as several other custom call makers. But, for a beginner, the standard off the shelf calls will be plenty sufficient to get them started. If after awhile, they find they really enjoy calling predators, then a person can work into the more advanced calls and techniques
