Getting excited already

With all this talk of the deer seasons just around the corner, I keep jumping ahead to the predator seasons I have been seeing and hearing reports of more and more coyotes lately. There also seems to be a lot of coon around as well.
I have been getting into hunting coons more in the last 2 years and they are a blast. All the coon hunting I have been doing is with calls and no dogs. I still want to try hitting the small streams and the islands around the river this year for coyotes, fox, and coons.
I would also like to get out west for a few days this winter to call the western plains coyotes. They are much easier to call and the numbers are greater. ANybody else feeling the itch, or am I the only one who ranks predators over the deer ?

Hey Am, I’m with ya… I just finished painting my .223 and plan to put a new scope on it tomorrow. I connected on my first called ‘yote last winter and I’ve got the bug pretty bad I’ll spend August sighting in and shooting a bit, then waiting for the snow,… hoping for a shot at a ‘yote or fox w/ the bow while waiting for some venison. How have you been hunting the coon w/ calls? I’ve read a bit about it but never talked to anyone who has tried it around here.

I have one of the Cabela’s brand electronic tape callers. There are several tapes from Dennis Kirk and Johnny Stewart with different distress sounds. Basically, I go out in the woods where there are coon likely to be around. Put the tape in, hit play, and wait for the action to begin Almost all of the coon we have called have actually came running to the call but then climb in a tree real close by. Once we hear them, we turn the light on and shoot them. We have the best luck near water of any sort. I plan on spending a lot more time chasing coons this fall than I did last year. It is a blast and easy to do.

I have a question for you on painting a rifle. Do you have a synthetic stock or wood? I would love to paint a white camo pattern on my 22-250 that has a wood stock and is used for coyote hunting only. I just don’t know how to do it and make it look nice. Any insight you have, I would love to hear

AM, Talking about coons……we had one in the front yard last night, it was walking in circles in the driveway, when I put a spotlight on it, it would walk into the light, but then would start going in circles again. It never lifted it’s head, don’t know if it was blind, or sick, or what. You could hear the tv from where it was, it kept coming closer until it was right next to the house, I didn’t trust that it wasn’t sick, so figuring it maybe had a deficiency of some sort, I gave it a small dose of lead.

We have been hearing lots of yotes around the farm. Everyone around here says they are too numerous this year, You’ll have to do something about that this winter.

I would love the opportunity to hunt your farm again this winter I plan on doing more coyote hunting this year than deer hunting. Along with a lot more fall fishing
That coon was definitely not normal At least you put it out of its misery

Mike, I am seeing tons of coons also. They religiously check my woodduck houses… which all 3 are empty who knows, maybe the coons got to em early.

I will definitely be calling coons again this fall. That is if there are many left by then. For awhile there, the coons were laying all over the roads This year I am not going to deer hunt at all and concentrate more on predators and small game. My desire to chase coyotes is much stronger than it is for deer. Plus, I plan on getting my kids out a lot more this fall to hunt along side me. Next year 2 of them will be old enough to hunt and they say they want to so I better start getting them out in the woods more

    Hey Am,

I finally got the chance to PM you about the rifle project, sorry it took so long. I’m getting pumped about the fall, can’t give up bowhunting but I’m also going to try for some ‘coon and any ‘yote that comes near my tree. I’ll try to post a pic of my finished gun project.

    later,

Bring on the cold weather and snow
Been hearing alot of yotes lately and they have really got me fired up. The other night at 1 am they were howling behind the house and I sat and listened to them for 20 minutes. Is it fall yet.

Those pics were pure torture for me Dodge Last Sunday when “Toad” and were out fishing, we watched a nice looking red fox walking the shoreline I would love to make a road trip up that way this winter I had the calls out this weekend playing around. There is nothing I like to hear more than a coyotes lonesome howl or a pack calling to each other. Come on winter

Does MN have a designated “season” for coyotes?
