Coyote hunting venture

A few weeks ago Anchor Man asked about doing a segment for Howland Outdoors on coyote calling. HookNfinger jumped at the chance and graciously volunteered the land to hunt. I also volunteered to do the calling. So, this past Tuesday, the plan came together and we gave it a shot. We met in Kellog, MN and went to Matt’s property just up the road. We had one thing going against us from the start….WIND. Wind is not a coyote hunter’s friend when it is blowing pretty steady. Matt led us through the pasture into a very nice looking sandy rolling hill area with nearby woods and scattered scrub oaks. As soon as we stepped out of the trucks, they could hear a group of coyotes yipping and howling off in the distance. I couldn’t hear them in the wind, but I am deaf in one ear anyway. We set Jason and the camera up in a deer box blind and Matt and myself took our positions. I started with a set of lonesome howls in hopes that the calls would carry to the pack that was out in the hills somewhere. After a bit, I went to playing the bunny blues. We didn’t get any response from this stand site. I am totally convinced the calls just couldn’t carry far enough in the wind, otherwise those coyotes would have responded. We then went to another section of land that was mostly swamp with hardwoods in the bottom. This area also just screamed coyote country. No response at this stand either. In all, we made 3 different stands with no responses at any of them. But, we did get to see quite a few geese and eagles up close, and that is part of the fun of coyote hunting to me. I also got to meet 2 more great people from this site. If given the opportunity, I would rather go and teach other’s how to call coyotes and also learn from other’s as well, then chase any other animal. There is something about it that I can’t get out of my system. A large part of all the no response stands that keeps me coming back is the pure challenge it offers. You are more likely to NOT have a coyote come charging in to the call than you are to have them respond. Also, I love the fact where I change from being the hunter to being the hunted. With coyotes, you are the one being hunted when they come to find out what other coyote is in their territory or trying to find the rabbit that is squeling for dear life. So even though the coyote usually wins, the game of odds is in my favor the more times I get out and call them.
I want to thank Matt and Jason for allowing me the opportunity to be involved in this adventure
