February 22, 2006 at 3:43 am #15318Here it is in a nut shell.
OK, as most of you know, a group of us has decided to go ahead and push for a law change to allow artificial lights in predator hunting. It’s going very well.
Our legislative session starts on March 1st and the bill will be introduced into the house and senate shortly after that.
We will need every bit of support we can get at that point. If you are a Minnesotan who hunts predators then, as part of this brother-hood you NEED to help us at this point.
There is a small group who has worked hard and put in a lot of time to get it this far. You NEED to be a part of this final push!
If you didn’t get the email I sent out today, contact me and have me add you to the list of people who are working on this. I’ll get you a copy of this email. If you had gotten emails from me previously on this topic and didn’t today, let me know. It’s likely that I missed adding you to the list for this email.
Apathy is NOT helpful. Unless you are opposed to using artificial lights to hunt predators and know that you never would because of your ethics on this topic, I expect to be hearing from you if you aren’t on the email list.
Let’s hear from you! write me at [email protected]

February 22, 2006 at 3:44 am #15319I couldn’t find a link for it. Randy doesn’t have a direct link to get on-board with this issue. Did you PM him so he could send you the info to help with this bill? That would be the best option

February 22, 2006 at 3:58 am #15321Awesome This is really an important bill for predator hunters to get on-board with. AT this time, only MN residents can really help out with this bill from my understanding. The use of lights makes coyote hunting at night easier and SAFER. The DNR doesn’t want you to use lights for predators, but on the other hand they expect you to clearly identify your target At night, it is very difficult to identify a coyote from a wolf or domestic dog. We in WI can at least use a light at the point of kill, but not for scanning while we are hunting. In MN, you can’t even do that

February 22, 2006 at 12:31 pm #15323Adam, Wats…What’s the DNR’s reasoning behind not using lights?
To be honest, I thought you could use lights. (uninformed me!)
Can’t we use lights when a coon is treed?

February 22, 2006 at 1:55 pm #15332My understanding on the issue (I think this was in an Outdoor news article awhile back) was that the MN DNR was worried that any use of lights would make shining deer and other animals more prevelant, and harder for COs to keep track of. Seems like flawed reasoning to me, which is what the MN DNR does.
I guess I am one of those “Barroom biologists” they always talk about If you guys have a link, post it. I would love to sign my name on.
The downside to this is that I would have to buy more gear….or is that the upside ?

RBukerPosts: 18February 22, 2006 at 2:17 pm #15333Guys,
I just want to clarify a few things here. First off, the MN DNR is NOT against this proposal. In fact, the final wording was run through the DNR division of enforcement and was approved by their legal department. So, in reality, they are on our side! That’s great news.
I have also drummed up a great deal of support in the legislature. The bill will be introduced to committee shortly and if it gets out of committee (which I’m almost certain of) then it will go to the floor in the senate and house.
Basically what this will do is to change the wording of the current shining law to allow artificial lights for hunting coyotes, foxes (red and grey) and raccoons as long as the hunter is at least 200 ft from a vehicle, not in a road right of way and using a hand held or electronic caller. The season for this will be Jan 1st through March 15th.
I am in need of some very dedicated sportsmen to help me once this bill gets a number assigned. If you are willing to help, please email me at [email protected] Or, if you have any questions, feel free to email me.
Thanks again.
Randy

February 22, 2006 at 2:59 pm #15336Welcome to IDA Randy!!
Thanks for the clarification!
I hope you’ll make this your home even after the law change has been pasted!
Since the DNR is on our side, which is 2/3’s the battle, really all we have to do is ensure our representives are aware that we (sportsmen) support it….correct?

This is my firt time finding your site. I’ve got to work today and teach a class tonight. In the next few days I look forward to taking some time to look over your site. With fishing season coming on, I’m getting pretty eager to get that boat in the water!

February 22, 2006 at 4:54 pm #15339Why is there a season on hunting a predator that is uncontrolled and does not have a season? Unless this has changed, I thought coyotes were different then fox or another controlled animal. Correct me if I’m wrong

RBukerPosts: 18February 22, 2006 at 5:08 pm #15342The season isn’t on the coyote, it’s on the use of lights. The season is one of the “give and takes” we did with the DNR in order to get their approval and support. They were concerned with the idea that lights not be used during deer season so Jan 1st is the start date because it’s after all deer seasons are closed. We closed the light season on March 15th because that’s when the fox and raccoon season will close from here on out.

February 22, 2006 at 9:53 pm #15350Welcome to IDA Randy I am also a member of Predator Masters, and that is where I first seen the call for help. Adam actually beat me to posting this on here.
For the IDA members; Randy is a moderator on Predator Masters and does a great job over there. He is very knowledgeable when it comes to legislation topics and anything to do with predator hunting So, if you guys in MN could show your support for fellow hunters, it would be greatly appreciatedFebruary 22, 2006 at 9:53 pm #423319Welcome to IDA Randy I am also a member of Predator Masters, and that is where I first seen the call for help.
