After several Pm’s back and forth, 2jranch (IDA member) graciously offered Dodge Boy and myself the opportunity to call coyotes on their property Thanks a bunch Jim and June
We arrived at the farm around 7 this morning to meet Jim and June and to get directions and the lay of the land. We then went out and drove around and got an idea on what we were going to be hunting. The land was perfect, a mix of woods, ag fields, and swamp. We made out first set ovverlooking the swampy area with no coyotes, but plenty of deer and pheasants While walking down the dirt two track, there was coyote sign everywhere , so we knew we were in a good area. Our next stand also came up empty. We then decided to get up on higher ground and try our luck in the farm fields. We parked the truck out of site and walked to the top of the hill to see what was on the other side. Right away we noticed a couple fence lines that connected into a T. All the fences had nice brush up against them and a few smaller trees mixed in, perfect cover. The fence divided a couple ag fields and a draw ran up the other fence line. It was perfect except the wind was blowing pretty good. If there is one thing that I don’t like to hunt in, it’s wind. We figured what the heck, let’s try anyway. Dodge and I got settled in about 40 yards apart and I proceeded to start calling. I took a gamble and started with a set of challenge barks and howls. With no response I got out the Primos Regulator and made some loud puppy like whimpers and used the howler to make some barks. Shortly after I made that series, I look over my left shoulder and not more than 20 feet is a coyote on the backside of the fence walking toward me, but looking where Greg was sitting. I tried to turn and get a shot right away, but my coat was stuck on the barbwire fence By this time, the coyote had caught Greg’s scent and was starting to turn and run off. I finally got my coat unstuck, turned and grabbed the post, which now has a hold of my glove and is stuck in my hand . I stand up as the coyote is running now and the weeds were in the way. I move a little more and finally get a shot off but it was a hasty one at that. Greg had heard the coyote coming in, but he was too close, and he didn’t want to move and spook him. The coyote was pretty big and had a very nice coat on him. We didn’t get to kill one, but it was still just as exciting. Man do I love coyote hunting
Thanks, 2jranch, we had a ball and f\definitely plan to come back out

Ya know they are close when you can hear footsteps.
I never saw him come up the fence line so where he came from is just a guess. Hard to look behind you and not move too much.

Greg was definitely in a tough position to be in. Having a coyote that close and not knowing exactly where he is, is a freaky feeling Neither of us really know where exactly he came from, it just appeared

Sounds like fun, never tried it myself, have friends who make “drives” for them. What were you using for a gun? In my neck of the woods they like to use 12 ga auto’s with #4 buck.

Wat’s is using a 22-250, and I am using a 243. There are lots of varmit guns out there besides these. If ya do alittle research on the web you can get alot of info. As close as that yote was today that 12 ga. would have done the ticket. But most yote shooting is done at 50+ yards.

    I almost exclusively use a .22-.250, but occasionaly I use the .243
I have never done drives for coyotes, sounds like a lot of work It is much easier to make them come to me

very cool, I’m sure close encounters can be unnerving… which makes it even more fun. A buddy of mine had one come past him at about 10 yds once while turkey hunting, gave him a serious case of the shakes.

This coyote had about the same color of coat as the one you shot, it was awesome I would have loved to have been able to drop him, but the big challenge for me was getting him to come to the call Afterthat, it is all a bonus

Mike and Greg, you are welcome back anytime. Just another example of the fine people we’ve met on this site. Maybe Jim will be healed up enough to go out and be another backup one of these times.

I rarely venture into this forum. I just found all the talk about yote hunting. I’ve done it for the past 4 or 5 years. These past two years were great hunting for them. 3 weeks ago I got one in the Rice area with a 20 yd shot. Thats the closest shot I’ve ever had. I couldn’t imagine 20 feet! I bet you could smell him. Anyway, I shoot a 25 06 and its great for getting lead out there. My friend is the one you got me into predator hunting. Hes had his share of fox and I’m still waiting for mine. He shoots a 223 by choice.

Last year a friend and I were calling under a full moon and we had a hawk come down and take a swipe at the speaker we had out in front of us about 10 feet. We had put a stocking cap over it because the moon was so bright it was reflecting off of it. Scared the crap out of us. Way cool though- have not done any hunting this year- no time and no snow.

Just this year I was sitting in tree bow hunting and there tons of crows around there. I just happened to have a mouth crow call in my bag so I got it out and proceded to do a baby crow in distress call and within 20 seconds a huge red tail hawk lands 10 feet from me in the tree. That was unreal. I take it he had heard the sound before.

A freind and I were out last year night hunting for coyotes and we had set up in a narrow strip of woods over looking a beanfeild. Shirtly after we made a series of calls on the digital caller, we had an owl come and land in a tree right above us. He kept “hooting” at us the entire time we were there. My buddy was afraid he was going to try and steal his caller
