Finally Connected…

Well, I finally connected this past weekend. I set up overlooking a CRP field that connected to a brushy draw and fired up the call. After waiting a bit after the first series I cranked up the volume. It wasn’t more than a couple of minutes before I had a pair of coyotes coming at a dead run. As they approached I backed off on the call so they could hone in on me and they started to swing out of the CRP and were right on line. I picked a spot where I figured the ‘yotes would pop out of the tall grass and waited… when the first one popped out I anchored him with the .223 at about 160 yds. Before I could get on the second one it had turned on the afterburners and headed for the hills. This was defiinitely a highlight of my hunting career so far…

Just a curiostiy question….What does a yote hide go for these days????? What is done with a yote after you shoot one?? I am pondering the idea of trying this just don’t know what happens after you are successful.. I have no idea!!

Not sure what the laws are but I think they would be better used for more ‘yote bait than to sell the hide?

that is an awesome looking coyote. Looks to be a well furred male. Congratulations It doesn’t matter how many times you are unsuccesful, because once you finally do connect, you forget all about them. I am curious if you shot the lead dog and if it was indeed a male? Also, are you using a FoxPro call or a Loudmouth? And what sound were you using? Again, congrats on connecting on one of the toughest animals to hunt

After you pelt it out, I believe you can pack it in salt(?) and send it to a company up by Duluth(?) that will tan it for you.

I usually just skin them and take the hide to the local fur buyer and sell them. Someday, I would like to get a full body mount

I have had your picture going through my head all day. You should definitely give yourself a big pat on the back. You belong to an elite list of people that have purposely went out to call a coyote and then shoot them. Not many people can do that The coyote is so tough to hunt out in there element. When you add big woods into the equation, you really have something to be proud of I just had to congratulate you again for a great job in harvesting a coyote

Thanks Am, I appreciate it… and you’re right, all of the waiting is forgotten after you see two of the critters coming in at a dead run. I did end up shooting the lead dog (male), probably should have taken the one in back first but didn’t want to get greedy on my first shot opportunity. I definitely wanted to bag at least one. The call I was using is a homebrew version of an e-caller… I picked up the idea from the Predator Masters website. It consists of an 8 watt weatherproof PA speaker and a mini amp from Radio Shack. I enclosed it all in a Rayovac 6 volt lantern housing (painted it up) and power the whole unit through a cheap ($25.00) mp3 player that I got on ebay. The sound I used was a basic cottontail that I downloaded off the Western Rivers website. They have a bunch of downloads that are free for the taking. Let me know if you’re interested and I can dig up the links for you.

    thanks again,

    shooter

Last year I did some ‘yote removal for a few farmers during the snare season… I sold the furs for around $10.00 a piece. Not a great price but I’m in it more for the challenge. I’m definitely going to get any of the ‘yotes that I shoot tanned. I’ve heard of the place in Duluth, and I believe they take salted pelts.

You also can send/take them to Johnson Furs south of Willmar. I took one there that I shot out behind my old place, he was just standing there, so he got it !!! They tanned it for me and it is hanging in my basement. Looks cool, even after 8 years.
    Cost me $40.
