I myself have not gotten out since my last post This year with the weather just hasn’t gotten me fired up yet I like it to be COLD and lots of SNOW. With this warm weather and dry ground, coyotes are not all that hungary. They can find mice, rabbits, and plants without any problems. Therefore, they are not real responsive to calling in my opinion. I did get to see a very large and well furred coyote right in the town of Necedah yesterday He ran across the road in front of us and stopped in somebody’s front yard. Talk about weird. I hope to get out again soon. If the wind lays down, I may try this week sometime.

Have not been out much. Like you waiting for weather. Biggest reason is the sloppy ground, I get quite a ways off the road before I call and I like to be able to drive part ways and will not tear up anyones ground. They are callable right now though. Howling has been working like dynamite in a farm pond.

I will definitely have the holer with me. I love to call them in with howling. Which howl are you using right now? I am getting out this week for sure

I’ve been out a bit over the past 3 weekends… no response to the call, but the real burn is that I’ve seen a ‘yote the past 2 Sunday mornings on the way to my stand sites. The one I saw this morning looked like a big male, real dark, almost black in color. I’m calling both farmers this week to get access. How does the howling gig work? I’m not real familiar with it…

I saw a dandy male here in Washington County in Afton. In the middle of a wide open field at 9:00 AM. Are they getting close to the breeding season for them to do that?

Yeah, I think so… the males may be starting to roam a bit later as Feb. approaches…

Howling for coyotes is a blast and very effective at times. Early in the year I will use a lonesome howl. With that howl there are a few varuations, but the key is to not use many barks or none at all. With your howler, make a long drawn out howl and taper it off at the end.
During the breeding season you can use the various challenge howls. What I do is make 2-3 quick barks and a medium length howl and repeat. Wait 5 minutes or so and do it again. You can also do more barks with a short howl and a few yips at the end of the howl as well. The challenge will usually bring the males looking for a fight. The sub alpha males will occasionally respond to the calls, but will come in very cautious. I use a Knight&Hale EZ Howler because it is the easiest one to use for me. There are a ton ofthem on the market. Randy Anderson howlers also have great reviews as well as hand made ones. You can use the howls by themselves or follow them up with a distress sound. I have had times where coyotes will come racing in to the howls before I even get a chance to use distress sounds. But, just like anything else, they may not respond to them either.

I hear coyotes almost any evening that I’m outside just before dark. I don’t know how far away they are but they sound close. I live just above a river bottom and see tracks but not sure if they are dog or coyote tracs. Wanna come up sometime and check it out. I think your also going to be at the get-together on Mille Lacs and we can talk about calling some in then.

I am not aggressively howling now. Just a couple subtle barks and then subtle lonesome howls. Do not expect a vocal response, just sit tight and wait. Ki Yis also work as they do year long.

Robby makes a very good point on the response. I have never had a coyote howl back that I have heard. So when howling, don’t expect them to howl back, just keep your eyes open for them coming at a dead run or sneaking in

I was out last weekend (1/15) a bit. West Central MN. Friday night during the full moon was great. First 2 sets, 2 ‘yotes – should’ve had 3. One came in too fast and close for me to get the scope on. Next morning, we had 2 red fox come into the call. We could not get them closer than 200 yds though. My brother had the shot(s) but missed. Saturday got real windy. Sunday was the same and we could not draw any out into the open. Heard a lot howling though. We ran into a number of hunters late at night too, but only one group was having luck. I did not use any howling calls. Cottontails on the digital worked great. I don’t think anyone in the area we hunt has truly been calling much. I believe most are road hunting/spotting during the day and/or using runners. Seems like a lot of people just don’t like to work for them by walking in, setting up and calling. That’s my preferred style. Spotting and stalking is fine though too – sometimes. When we run into the runners, we’ll pack it in and drive. Chances are, you won’t be seeing anything for some time when they are out hunting. ……They are usually pretty productive.
    There’s always next weekend though!
    Good hunting.

I also prefer to call them in I enjoy the challenge of making them hunt me down instead of running them down or road hunting. I didn’t make it out this week, but I think Dodge Boy and I are going to make an attempt to get out next week, right Dodge

4-8 inches of new fresh snow on the ground in West Central MN and I’m stuck home for the weekend. The only place I’m going is the Boat Show.
    Call-em in and shoot-em up!!

I am so ready for tomorrow morning
Dodge Boy and myself are going to go and hit the woods tomorrow and try to find a coyote or 2 It has been awhile since I went out so I have been tearing the house apart to get my gear found and put together Hopefully we will find a few willing participants. We plan to hit the woods shortly after daylight and make a few sets and then look for some rabbits and maybe even a few squirrels I will have a report up sometime tomorrow afternoon
