Here I am going to give my views on fooling the eyes of a predator. Concealing oneself is of the utmost importance. It only takes a glimpse of movement or a flash of sunlight reflecting of your equipment to send a coyote in a mad dash in the opposite direction.
First, let’s talk clothing. For those of you who bowhunt, you have all the clothing you need. It is exactly like hunting deer. In order to fool predators you need to blend into the environment in which you are hunting. My personal favorite is Predator’s Fall grey or the new Deception pattern. These colors break up your outline and allow you to blend into most all of the woods in the fall and winter. If you are lucky enough to hunt in snow like we have in this part of the country, you can’t beat a snow camo pattern. But, with snow, you can make your own camo for cheap. All you need is a white bed sheet. You can either simply cover up with it, or get creative and sew a makeshift outfit. Also, do not forget your face and hands. Always wear a facemask and gloves. Your hands and face shine from the suns light.
Now that we have the clothing basics down, now comes equipment. Rifles, scopes, and eyeglasses all have the potential to foil a perfect calling set-up. Concealing your rifle can be done quickly and easily. Some rifles are spray painted with a pattern of your choice or are done professionally. A camo t-shirt can be cut up and made in to a gun sock for a multi-purpose rifle. There are many effective ways to camo a rifle and it is something that really should be done. Scopes should also be covered to prevent the glare from the bright rays of the sun. Little things like shiny eyeglasses can also be seen by a coyote from hundreds of yards away. Any flashes like these are a warning signal to any incoming predator. Eyeglasses can be taken care of by wearing a hat and keeping the top half of your face shielded by the brim.
All these tips will make you a better predator hunter. When hunting coyotes you need all the advantages you can get to not only be able to get them to respond, but also to get them close enough for the shot. I like to get them in my face before I pull the trigger. To me it is more about how close can I get them rather than how many I can kill. But, I do like to drop them just as much as the next guy.
